Rudy Pankow’s character, JJ Maybank, has been a cornerstone of the Pogues since the series began. In a startling revelation during season 4 part 1, JJ discovers that his true parents are Chandler Groff and Larissa Genrette, sparking an identity crisis as he shifts from identifying as a Pogue to being branded a Kook. Tragically, he has little time to navigate this life-altering revelation before falling victim to his biological father’s treachery.

In a web of familial connections, JJ’s wealthy grandfather, Wes Genrette, earlier enlists the Pogues to search for Blackbeard’s treasure. Before his mysterious death in episode 2, he leaves a letter addressing ‘Master JJ Maybank’, urging him to confront his father about the enigmatic ‘Albatross.’

As the story unfolds, JJ learns of his true lineage. His mother, Larissa, supposedly died at sea aboard the Albatross while her young son, John, survived. Charles Groff’s manipulation takes a darker turn, as it is revealed he fabricated the so-called Blackbeard curse, ultimately leading to the demise of Larissa, Wes, and now JJ, all in pursuit of Genrette’s estate.

In an interview on August 29, 2024, Rudy Pankow hinted at a possible departure from Outer Banks, stating,

“I’m so thankful to be in this position…to be working on this craft with these characters. But I know that’s not going to last forever.”

As the narrative shifts to the upcoming fifth season, the remaining Pogues are expected to seek vengeance for JJ’s murder, with their sights set on Groff. While rumors circulate about a possible cameo appearance from Pankow through flashbacks, there has been no official confirmation from the show’s creators as of now.

Showrunner Josh Pate recently discussed the emotional weight pressing upon the Pogues in season 5, remarking,

“They feel a duty to avenge JJ. If they don’t go after Groff, they’ll feel like they’ve let the spirit of JJ or their friendship down.”

“They may end up getting treasure as part of their revenge, but it’s all about avenging JJ, and trying to get some solace or peace, and to move on from the grief they all feel.”
