Oshi no Ko, a groundbreaking manga series, concluded its run in November 2024. Yet, the story continues to captivate audiences through its ongoing anime adaptation and a newly launched live-action series available on Prime Video. The live-action series made its global debut on November 28, 2024, presenting a condensed narrative of the manga prior to the release of a feature-length film that covers the final arc, which premiered in Japan on December 20. This movie has garnered rave reviews from both fans and critics, prompting the series’ creators to finally express their thoughts on the adaptation.
Creators of Oshi no Ko Express Satisfaction with Live-Action Adaptation
Since its anime debut in April 2023, Oshi no Ko has achieved remarkable popularity, with the original manga already nearing its conclusion, forcing eager fans to flood bookstores for updates on the unfolding story. This widespread enthusiasm paved the way for the live-action adaptation on Prime Video, timed perfectly to coincide with the conclusion of the manga.
Despite the mixed track record of live-action adaptations concerning anime and manga, the creators Akasaka and Yokoyari have expressed their unwavering support for this latest rendition. Akasaka, the story’s author, remarked, “I feel respected”and highlighted a poignant line from the series: “I have no choice but to believe and entrust,”a sentiment he felt was honored in the adaptation.
Illustrator Mengo Yokoyari also provided positive remarks about the live-action series. However, she admitted to having initial reservations, expressing, “I wondered if it was okay to do Oshi no Ko in live action as I thought that my art style and character designs were not suitable for live action.”Despite her concerns about the adaptation being challenging, she concluded that her worries were unfounded.
The Final Act of Oshi no Ko Receives Positive Early Reviews
The Controversial Ending of the Original Manga
The film adaptation of Oshi no Ko: The Final Act is currently enjoying favorable early responses from audiences and critics on various online platforms, particularly for its sensitive portrayal of the darker elements within the entertainment industry.
This trend of differing receptions between manga and its anime adaptations is not without precedent. A similar situation occurred with the critically acclaimed series, Attack on Titan, which faced backlash for its manga conclusion, yet was later lauded for its anime finale. Whether Oshi no Ko will experience a similar shift in audience perception as the anime concludes remains to be seen. However, the live-action adaptation’s recent release has received commendations from the original creators, showcasing its faithful homage to the source material.
