Oscar-Winning Composer Reflects on Timing and Not Composing for MCU Films

While Hans Zimmer is a renowned composer celebrated for his work on superhero films, he has not yet collaborated with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).Confronted with this question recently, Zimmer attributed his absence from MCU projects to timing conflicts.

Typically, composers are drawn to similar projects through professional relationships and their distinct musical styles. However, many who have contributed to superhero films—including Zimmer, who boasts a robust portfolio with DC Comic adaptations—have not partnered with Marvel yet. In candid admissions, he revealed that while Marvel Studios has approached him with offers, he turned them down.

Hans Zimmer, a German music producer and composer, remains one of the film industry’s most innovative figures, having received an array of prestigious awards such as Oscars, Grammys, and Golden Globes. His impressive filmography includes significant contributions to superhero sagas like The Dark Knight Trilogy, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and Wonder Woman 1984. During his recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, host Josh Horowitz expressed surprise that Zimmer had never officially joined the MCU roster, to which Zimmer responded candidly.

Reflecting on his choices, Zimmer noted, “They have, and it was always—timing wasn’t great. And really, quite honestly, I’m looking for other things right now. Look, I’ve done the trifecta. I’ve done Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, and Wonder Woman! I mean, what do you want me to do? Some of the minor characters? Probably yes.”

Although he considered it somewhat “arrogant”to voicing such opinions, Zimmer’s reputation has garnered attention from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, who was eager to collaborate, once humorously asking him, “Hans, what are you complaining about?”Regardless of these interactions, Zimmer has not yet collaborated with Marvel.

In a 2016 BBC interview, Zimmer described the challenges he faced while scoring Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He noted it was a daunting task to find a new musical language for the project. Reflecting on his extensive career, he revealed: “I did Batman Begins with Chris [Nolan] 12 years ago, so The Dark Knight trilogy might be three movies to you, to me, it was 11 years of my life. I have officially retired from the superhero business.”

Despite claiming retirement from superhero projects in 2016, Zimmer did return to compose music for other films, such as X-Men: Dark Phoenix and Wonder Woman 1984. This suggests a potential for future collaborations with Marvel, but fans are wise to temper their expectations as Zimmer has recently indicated he is seeking “other things right now.”Having made significant contributions to the major superhero franchises of the DCEU—Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman—Zimmer appears satisfied with his superhero portfolio and its expansion into Sony’s Spider-Man universe and the X-Men franchise.
