Productivity experts often advise keeping your hands on the keyboard due to the speed advantages of keyboard shortcuts over mouse usage. However, by optimizing your mouse’s capabilities, you can access frequently used shortcuts with ease, allowing one-handed operation for enhanced efficiency.
If you’ve overlooked the extra buttons on your mouse, aren’t sure how to utilize the buttons on a gaming mouse during productivity tasks, or are contemplating an upgrade, now is the perfect time to explore the full potential of your equipment.
My Mouse Setup
Since 2017, I’ve relied on the Logitech G502 gaming mouse, despite my limited gaming on PC. After experiencing interference with wireless models, I opted for a wired connection to enhance stability.
Although the G502 boasts excellent features, I’ve encountered consistent issues, specifically with the scroll wheel becoming excessively loose over time.
My G502 setup includes:
- Standard left and right mouse clicks
- A scroll wheel featuring three functions: middle-click, left, and right push
- A single button located at the top center of the mouse
- Two additional buttons adjacent to the left-click
- One button under the thumb’s natural position
- Two buttons positioned above the thumb area

A dedicated button allows toggling between notched scrolling and free scrolling, although this particular switch cannot be remapped. Overall, there are 9 customizable inputs, not including the basic left and right clicks. This flexibility enables you to assign simple tasks or complex shortcuts based on your workflow preferences.
Customizing Button Functions
For optimal button customization, you can utilize software provided by your mouse manufacturer. If you have a standard mouse, consider third-party options like X-Mouse Button Control.
Mouse Wheel Functionality
I retain the default middle-click functionality for the mouse wheel due to its frequent use in closing browser tabs and opening new links. While alternatives exist, I find that middle-clicking is more efficient for this purpose.
For added convenience, I’ve mapped a left push of the mouse wheel to Copy and a right push to Paste. With copy-pasting being a routine task, having these functions readily accessible minimizes the need to divert my hand from the mouse, enhancing my productivity.

The Lone Top Button
The button behind the scroll wheel speed toggle is best utilized for infrequent actions, so I’ve set it to Play/Pause for my music, which I constantly have playing through Spotify. While my keyboard features dedicated media controls, I appreciate having quick access to manage my music right at my fingertips.
Top-Side Buttons
The buttons located on the left side of the mouse were initially underutilized, but I eventually assigned them macros to enhance my efficiency. The top-front button executes a sequence of Ctrl + C, Ctrl + T, Ctrl + V, followed by Enter. This macro allows me to seamlessly search for highlighted text in my browser — a common action streamlined into one button press.

The second macro assigned to the lower button performs Ctrl + Shift + V, which opens my clipboard manager, ClipClip. This setup allows for quick access to my clipboard history, eliminating the need to remember keyboard combinations.
Thumb Buttons
The G502 includes three thumb-accessible buttons on the bottom-left side. I’ve kept the top two buttons as standard Forward and Back, which are invaluable for web browsing and applications like Slack. Their default functions work flawlessly, whereas keyboard shortcuts like Alt + Left/Right can be cumbersome in terms of hand positioning.
The final thumb button, naturally placed for easy access, was previously assigned to Ctrl + S for saving documents. Recently, however, I’ve repurposed it for a macro that selects the entire text field with Ctrl + A, copies it with Ctrl + C, and then deselects it by pressing Down. This alteration has proven useful when entering lengthy text into forms, safeguarding against potential data loss from connectivity issues or application crashes.
Enhancing Your Mouse Efficiency
While my productivity shortcuts are relatively straightforward, exploring various options could significantly enhance your mouse’s functionality. Begin by mapping your most frequent keyboard shortcuts, then gradually delve into more complex macros that streamline multiple actions.
Consider which tasks you perform most often on your computer; these represent the best opportunities for efficiency gains through button assignments. Additionally, investing in a device like a Stream Deck can further expand your productivity capabilities by providing physical buttons for custom shortcuts.
