
Meeting the recommended system requirements and achieving the necessary frames per second (FPS) in a video game does not necessarily guarantee a smooth gaming experience. A crucial factor that plays a significant role in your gameplay is known as frame time. Understanding this concept and how to stabilize it can dramatically enhance your gaming sessions.
Understanding Frame Time
FPS measures the total frames rendered each second, while frame time indicates the duration, in milliseconds, that it takes to render a single frame. Ideally, for a system performing at 60 FPS, the corresponding frame time should be approximately 16.67 milliseconds (calculated as 1000 ÷ 60).To ensure gameplay fluidity, this frame time must maintain consistency; for instance, at 144 FPS, the frame time should be around 6.94 milliseconds. Inconsistencies can lead to noticeable stuttering, disrupting your overall experience.
During intense gameplay, frame time variations may cause brief drops in FPS—say from 60 FPS down to 52-55 FPS for a fleeting moment. How to Monitor Frame Time
To identify frame time issues, utilizing a specialized tool to track this metric during gameplay is essential. We recommend using the free CapFrameX tool. To conduct your assessment, follow these steps:
- Launch CapFrameX and start your game with a capped FPS setting of your choice.
- Set Capture Time to 60 seconds, switch to your gaming window, and press F11 to begin recording.
- Continue playing the game without entering menus or static screens.

After a minute, return to CapFrameX and select the Analysis tab. Here you will find the Frametimes graph, which displays frame time as a blue line. This line should ideally hover close to the brown line representing the average frame time. A few isolated vertical spikes can be acceptable; however, a succession of spikes indicates significant frame time inconsistency.

Additionally, look for the bar chart that assesses frame time consistency. The following values should align closely with your FPS target:
- P95: This figure should match your target FPS.
- Average: It should be nearly identical to your FPS (a difference of 1-2 FPS is acceptable).
- P5 and P1: These can be 2-3 FPS lower than anticipated.
- 1% Low Average: A 10-20% drop in total FPS is tolerable, translating to 6-12 fewer FPS for a 60 FPS target.

In theory, these values should correlate with your FPS cap, although some variance is typical as long as it falls within acceptable limits.
Optimizing Frame Time Stability
If monitoring reveals unstable frame time, this may indicate inadequate resources or suboptimal configurations within your PC. Here are several strategies to enhance frame time stability:
1. Identify CPU or GPU Bottlenecks
Begin by ensuring your CPU and GPU aren’t the limiting factors in performance. If either component struggles to keep pace, frame time irregularities are likely to occur. Additionally, verify that your RAM capacity and bandwidth are sufficient, ideally configured in a dual-channel setup for optimal performance.
2. Properly Cap Frame Rate
For an ideal setup, cap your FPS to match your monitor’s refresh rate. If your GPU and display support adaptive sync technologies like G-Sync, leverage this feature to harmonize FPS and refresh rate. Alternatively, set a frame cap directly through your GPU settings—this is typically more consistent across various games compared to in-game caps.
3. Enable Anti-Lag Features in GPU Settings
Both Nvidia and AMD GPUs feature anti-lag options that reduce input delay by minimizing pre-rendered frames. Activating this function can help decrease frame time and mitigate stuttering, provided your GPU and CPU can manage the load. 4. Utilize Full-Screen Mode with Optimizations Disabled

5. Experiment with Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS)
