OpenAI’s “Sweetpea” Earbuds Launching as “Dime,” Anticipated to Consistently Fall Short of Expectations

OpenAI is eagerly preparing to introduce its inaugural consumer AI device, internally referred to as Sweetpea, with expectations for a market debut in the latter half of 2026. Nonetheless, recent insights suggest that the product may fall short of its ambitious targets.

OpenAI’s Sweetpea, Set to Launch as Dime, Faces Emerging Challenges

At the recent Axios House Davos event during the World Economic Forum, OpenAI executive Lehane affirmed that the company is prioritizing the launch of its first consumer AI device, aiming for a release in the second half of 2026.

In addition to this announcement, Taiwan’s Economic Daily indicated that OpenAI might target a September 2026 launch and aims to sell between 40 million and 50 million units in its first year. Notably, the device is anticipated to be manufactured by Foxconn in Vietnam.

Reports have highlighted that the Sweetpea device is primarily an AI-enhanced pair of earbuds leveraging extensive cloud-based processing capabilities. Importantly, it is speculated to integrate a cutting-edge 2nm Samsung Exynos chip responsible for some on-device computing tasks.

Recently, well-regarded insider Smart Pikachu reported that based on a newly released patent by OpenAI, the earbuds will enter the market under the consumer-friendly name “Dime.” However, the initial model is expected to be a basic headphone configuration, with the more advanced earbuds capable of delivering “phone-like” computational performance facing delays.

The increasing costs associated with memory components have significantly impacted the Bill of Materials (BOM) for the device’s 2nm chip, creating challenges for OpenAI as they navigate the device’s development.

Additionally, OpenAI is reportedly working on another consumer gadget dubbed “Gumdrop, ”which resembles a pen and is similar in size to the Apple iPod Shuffle. Unlike traditional devices, Gumdrop is designed without a dedicated screen and is packed with innovative features:

Equipped with an array of sensors, including cameras and microphones for contextual awareness.
Ability to locally run OpenAI’s customized AI models, supplemented with cloud computing for heavier tasks.
Capability to convert handwritten notes into text for seamless uploading to ChatGPT.
Enables communication with other devices similar to current smartphone interactions.
Designed to be portable, fitting comfortably in pockets or worn around the neck.
Anticipated for launch in 2026 or 2027.

Given the disappointing initial outlook for the Dime product, it’s plausible that the launch of “Gumdrop”could face substantial delays as well.
