Introduction of OpenAI’s GPT-4.1 Models for Developers
Earlier today, OpenAI unveiled its latest GPT-4.1 models specifically designed for developers. This new series encompasses three variations: GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and GPT-4.1 nano, all of which are exclusively accessible via APIs.
Key Features and Enhancements
The newly released models are tailored to enhance coding efficiency, improve instruction adherence, and bolster long-context comprehension. OpenAI has fine-tuned GPT-4.1 to tackle practical coding challenges effectively, ranging from frontend development to consistent format adherence and structured responses.
Token Capacity and Knowledge Update
Notably, GPT-4.1 supports an impressive context of up to 1 million tokens, enabling developers to work with extensive data sets seamlessly. Additionally, the models benefit from an updated knowledge cutoff, now extending to June 2024.

Integration with Microsoft Azure and GitHub
In conjunction with OpenAI’s announcement, Microsoft also declared that GPT-4.1, along with its mini and nano variants, is now integrated into the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service and available on GitHub. To cater to enterprise requirements, support for supervised fine-tuning of the GPT-4.1 and 4.1-mini models will be introduced later this week.
Customization and Enterprise Use
This fine-tuning capability will empower enterprises to tailor the foundational models according to their unique datasets, aligning with specific tone preferences, industry terminology, and workflow tasks. These customized models will be effectively managed and deployed through the Azure AI Foundry platform.
Accessing GPT-4.1 on GitHub
For GitHub users, the GPT-4.1 model is now accessible through GitHub Copilot and GitHub Models. Administrators of Copilot Enterprise will need to authorize access to the new model for their teams via updated settings in Copilot. Notably, this latest model is expected to outperform the previous version, GPT-4o, in several aspects, particularly in coding tasks.
All GitHub Copilot users can access GPT-4.1 (Preview) through the model picker in Visual Studio Code and via GitHub’s chat interface. Additionally, developers can experiment with GPT-4.1 alongside other models in the GitHub Models playground.
