OpenAI’s First Consumer AI Device, “Sweetpea” Earbuds, Set to Launch in H2 2026 with Projected Sales of 50 Million Units in Year One

OpenAI is making strides in the consumer technology sector, introducing its inaugural AI-powered device, known internally as “Sweetpea.”Recently, Chris Lehane, the Chief Global Affairs Officer, provided insights about this exciting development during his address at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, marking a shift from speculation to actionable information.

OpenAI Sets Ambitious Goals for Consumer AI Device in 2026

During his participation in the Axios House event at WEF, Lehane emphasized that the launch of OpenAI’s first consumer AI device is a top priority for the company this year, with plans to unveil the product in the second half of 2026. According to Taiwan’s Economic Daily, the anticipated launch is timed for September 2026, with ambitious sales targets ranging from 40 to 50 million units within its first year of availability. Manufacturing is expected to be handled by Foxconn in Vietnam.

Although details remain sparse, various reports suggest that the “Sweetpea”earbuds will leverage advanced cloud-based AI processing while incorporating a 2nm Samsung Exynos chipset for efficient on-device performance. This combination aims to provide a seamless user experience enriched by artificial intelligence.

In addition to the earbuds, OpenAI is reportedly developing another intriguing device—codenamed “Gumdrop.”This device resembles a pen and is comparable in size to the Apple iPod Shuffle, lacking a dedicated display. Noteworthy features of “Gumdrop”include:

Advanced contextual awareness through sensors, including cameras and microphones.
Local operation of OpenAI’s specialized AI models, supplemented by cloud capabilities for more demanding tasks.
Functionality to convert handwritten notes into digital text and facilitate immediate uploads to ChatGPT.
