OpenAI Purchases Company Responsible for New Apple Mac App Sky

OpenAI is continuing its expansion within Apple’s extensive ecosystem by acquiring Software Applications Incorporated, the company behind the innovative macOS application, Sky. This move signifies OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing automation and streamlining workflows for Mac users.

OpenAI’s Strategic Acquisition: Enhancing ChatGPT Integration

In a recent press announcement, OpenAI revealed its plans to integrate the advanced capabilities of Sky into ChatGPT. Sky serves as a natural language interface tailored for Mac systems, and the acquisition aims to leverage its functionality to improve user interaction with ChatGPT.

How Sky Enhances Mac User Experience

Sky functions as an AI-driven assistant on macOS, utilizing artificial intelligence to offer various features that significantly enhance productivity:

  1. It comprehensively understands the content displayed on the screen and executes user-driven commands.
  2. Users can initiate tasks across different applications, such as requesting Sky to summarize a webpage and then forwarding that summary through the Messages app.
  3. Custom automation scripts, shortcuts, and commands can be developed to amplify the capabilities of existing applications.
  4. Sky operates within a compact, persistent window that remains accessible above other applications.

“Sky is a powerful natural language interface for the Mac. With Sky, AI works alongside you, whether you’re writing, planning, coding, or managing your day. Sky understands what’s on your screen and can take action using your apps. We will bring Sky’s deep macOS integration and product craft into ChatGPT, and all members of the team will join OpenAI.”

According to Nick Turley, OpenAI’s VP and Head of ChatGPT, “Sky’s deep integration with the Mac accelerates our vision of bringing AI directly into the tools people use every day.”This integration is poised to revolutionize how users interact with AI on their devices.

Legacy and Future Prospects

It’s worth noting that the team behind Sky previously developed Workflow, an automation tool acquired by Apple in 2017 and later transformed into Shortcuts. Workflow enabled users to combine app functionalities, making complex tasks simpler through automation.

In comparison, Sky offers features that surpass Apple’s current capabilities within its AI systems. While Apple has been making strides in personal context awareness and in-app actions through Siri, performance concerns remain—especially as rumors swirl about Siri’s upcoming version set to launch with iOS 26.4 in spring 2026.

Additionally, Apple faced a significant setback recently with the departure of Ke Yang, the newly appointed lead of its Answers, Knowledge, and Information (AKI) team, who is reportedly moving to a position at Meta Platforms Inc.
