OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Search Experience to Compete with Google

Popular AI chat platforms, such as ChatGPT and Claude, operate using pre-trained large language models. This means users can’t depend on these tools for real-time or the most recent information. OpenAI unveiled the SearchGPT prototype in July, which adeptly answered user inquiries with fresh data sourced from the web, while also providing direct links to relevant references.

Building upon the insights gained from the SearchGPT prototype, OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Search, a novel web search integration within ChatGPT. This new feature merges the convenience of a natural language interface with timely updates including sports results, news articles, stock market updates, and other information.

Depending on the user’s query, ChatGPT can automatically perform a web search. Additionally, users have the option to initiate a manual search by clicking on the web search icon, if preferred.

OpenAI has collaborated with prominent news agencies such as Associated Press, Axel Springer, Condé Nast, Dotdash Meredith, Financial Times, GEDI, Hearst, Le Monde, News Corp, Prisa (El País), Reuters, The Atlantic, Time, and Vox Media to furnish news content in ChatGPT Search. When providing answers, ChatGPT will now more effectively highlight and cite information, complete with links to the original sources.

The ChatGPT Search feature will be accessible on both desktop and mobile devices. Starting today, users of ChatGPT Plus and Team accounts, along with those on the SearchGPT waitlist, can take advantage of this new search experience. ChatGPT Enterprise and Education users will gain access to this feature in the coming weeks, while all Free users can expect to see the rollout of the new Search experience over the months ahead.

Additionally, users can set ChatGPT Search as the default search feature in their Chrome browser by installing OpenAI’s new Chrome Extension. After installation, users can search straight from their browser’s URL bar.

With the introduction of ChatGPT Search, OpenAI is effectively closing the gap between traditional large language models and real-time data, enhancing the functionality and relevance of AI chatbots.
