
The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, recently embarked on a significant visit to Taiwan, making key stops at both TSMC and Foxconn. These discussions focused primarily on the company’s ambitious AI initiatives, notably the Stargate project and their pursuit of proprietary ASICs.
Sam Altman Engages TSMC and Foxconn for AI Innovations
OpenAI is actively working to expand its computational capabilities, engaging in substantial financial agreements with industry leaders such as NVIDIA and Coreweave for AI hardware. Additionally, the company is exploring the development of its own AI chips. A recent report from the Taiwan Economic Daily indicates that Altman’s discussions in Taiwan included pivotal talks with Foxconn about the Stargate project, as well as a visit to TSMC to review potential AI chip development.
Foxconn is increasingly recognized as a crucial supplier for NVIDIA’s rack-scale solutions, which are integral to the Stargate initiative. This ambitious project aims to set up multiple data centers and collaborates with significant partners, including OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, boasting a valuation of approximately $500 billion. Altman’s engagement with Foxconn likely centered on exploring AI server production capabilities and how the Taiwanese company can enhance the massive AI infrastructure being established.

In contrast, Altman’s discussions with TSMC are particularly vital, given the emphasis on developing custom AI chips. Initially, this project was to be a collaborative effort with Broadcom. However, with OpenAI’s recent recruitment of talent from Google’s TPU project, the company appears poised to assume more control over chip design, ultimately delegating manufacturing responsibilities to TSMC.
Although the exact specifications of OpenAI’s custom chips remain unclear, early predictions suggest the utilization of TSMC’s cutting-edge 3nm process, with full integration expected around 2026. Should this endeavor succeed, OpenAI’s ASIC will represent a groundbreaking moment in the realm of custom chip development among major tech firms, potentially presenting a viable alternative to NVIDIA’s existing offerings.
