Exploring ReactOS: The Open Source Alternative to Windows
Over the years, various potential alternatives to Windows have emerged, and in our retrospective series, we have revisited some noteworthy contenders. Projects like Corel Linux, BeOS, and Lindows have attempted to carve a niche in the operating system market, but none have captured the attention quite like ReactOS, often dubbed “Open Source Windows.”This ambitious project aims to replicate the user experience of Windows XP while remaining entirely open source.
Recent Developments in ReactOS
In the last few years, ReactOS has made moderate advances, particularly noted in late 2023 when the development team introduced UEFI booting support for various devices, including Nokia’s Lumia, Apple’s iPhone, and Valve’s Steam Deck. Notably, these technical requirements fall below those needed for Windows 11, showcasing ReactOS’s capability to operate efficiently on less demanding hardware.
Introducing USETUP: A User-Friendly GUI
In February of the following year, ReactOS upgraded its user experience with the launch of “USETUP, ”a graphical user interface designed to make setup processes more intuitive and accessible. However, despite these positive strides, updates from the ReactOS team have been sparse since this enhancement.
Progress Report: Challenges Ahead
Recently, the ReactOS development team provided a mixed progress report via their official X account. They highlighted ongoing challenges, particularly with audio functionality due to “bugs elsewhere.”
With work on kernel by our developer @olegdubinskij21, #ReactOS can now boot with Windows audio stack, in latest nightly builds! However, there’s no sound with Windows audio stack because of bugs elsewhere. Still impressive ^^ pic.twitter.com/hxSmfmvEP2

Subsequently, the team acknowledged that while limited sound functionality has been demonstrated, full audio support remains elusive.
For the record: there’s limited sound support in #ReactOS for now – shown by previous tests.
Future Prospects and Community Engagement
Despite a lack of recent social media activity, the ReactOS team has hinted at ongoing work behind the scenes. They indicated that more updates could be forthcoming, urging users to stay tuned for announcements regarding their recent progress.
Hey! We have been inactive on Twitter for a while. Stay tuned for our posts about recent works made on #ReactOS!

Looking Ahead
The ReactOS community eagerly anticipates continuous updates, especially as the development team has announced that LiveUSB support is included in the latest nightly builds and is expected in the upcoming version 0.4.15.
LiveUSB is available in latest nightly builds (and upcoming 0.4.15) of #ReactOS, since late 2020.
