Onyx Storm Transforms Violet’s Connection with The Marked Ones in the Most Positive Manner

In Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros, characters experience significant growth and transformation, particularly the evolving relationship between Violet and the marked ones. After a tumultuous beginning in Fourth Wing, the narrative in Onyx Storm highlights their gradual acceptance of Violet as not just a companion, but a leader, despite their lingering trust issues and tendency to keep her in the dark about their strategic plans.

Following the shocking conclusion of Iron Flame, where only Violet is aware of Xaden’s transformation into a venin, the prologue of Onyx Storm reveals her willingness to trust Xaden’s companions. Upon sharing the unsettling truth with Garrick, Bodhi, and Imogen, an agreement forms between them to maintain secrecy regarding Xaden’s condition and to assist in seeking a remedy. Although Xaden remains the focal point of their loyalty due to his role as the revolution’s leader, the narrative beautifully illustrates the growing allegiance to Violet as well, marking a significant reversal in their previous dynamic.

From the outset of the novel, it becomes apparent that only a few individuals are aware of Xaden’s affliction. Imogen, Garrick, and Bodhi are often depicted as vigilantly monitoring Xaden to prevent him from tapping into greater power. Yet, while they seek a cure for him, the initial chapters of Onyx Storm showcase their genuine concern for Violet’s safety. In the first chapter, Imogen expresses apprehensions about Violet sharing a room with Xaden, even suggesting she find alternative sleeping arrangements until a cure is found.

Though Xaden has yet to draw more power from the earth at this point, the marked ones understand the constant temptation that exists. Their concern for Violet represents a sweet moment of growth in their relationships, highlighting the progress they’ve made in viewing her as one of their own. Although Violet might not fully appreciate their worries, the narrative consistently illustrates how they vigilantly protect her, trying to ensure Xaden does not inadvertently harm her.

Throughout Onyx Storm, Violet’s relationship with Garrick, Bodhi, and Imogen continues to deepen. Their increasing camaraderie not only arises from their loyalty to Xaden and worries for Violet’s safety, but also from a profound respect for her burgeoning leadership qualities. The narrative propels Violet into the complexities of leadership, compelling her character to evolve as she navigates her newfound responsibilities, which stem from her powerful signet and dragon. While the challenge of leading the quest weighs heavily on her, it becomes apparent that the other characters from Fourth Wing admire Violet’s decisions, even if they display disagreement at times.

At the conclusion of Onyx Storm, Violet’s secret marriage to Xaden transforms her status, positioning her to become the Duchess of Tyrrendor and the enduring leader of the revolution. As Xaden’s absence leaves her in control of Aretia, it is evident that her leadership will gain further significance in future installments of the Empyrean Series. With the support of her squad and the growing respect from the marked ones, Violet is set on a path to rule, setting an intriguing stage for the challenges ahead.
