Overview of Onimusha: Way of the Sword
- The upcoming Onimusha: Way of the Sword promises engaging swordplay without overwhelming difficulty.
- Capcom is revitalizing the Onimusha franchise with this new title, slated for release in 2026.
- Developers clarify their vision for the game, distancing it from the notorious “Souls-like”genre.
Capcom’s development team behind Onimusha: Way of the Sword has recently shed light on the anticipated game’s design philosophy, particularly its approach to difficulty. Set to debut on the PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S in 2026, this action title marks a significant return for the franchise.
Once a flagship title on the PlayStation 2, the Onimusha series has remained dormant for many years, with the only notable entries being the Japan-exclusive mobile adaptations and a 2018 remaster of the classic Onimusha: Warlords. Despite fans believing the franchise was consigned to history, Capcom unveiled Onimusha: Way of the Sword during a showcase event on February 4, signaling a robust revival aimed at contemporary gaming platforms.
Gameplay and Difficulty in Onimusha: Way of the Sword
In their presentation, Producer Akihito Kadowaki and Director Satoru Nihei emphasized the core gameplay principles of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. According to Nihei, the development team is intentionally steering clear of creating an “impossibly difficult”gaming experience. Instead, their goal is to immerse players in exhilarating sword combat that enhances the satisfaction of overcoming foes.
This clarity from the director establishes a more accessible experience, setting Onimusha: Way of the Sword apart from the notorious difficulty associated with “Souls-like”titles, which are often criticized for their punishing gameplay that can frustrate players.

Players unfamiliar with the Onimusha series may initially draw parallels between its dark fantasy aesthetic and titles like FromSoftware’s Sekiro or Koei Tecmo’s Nioh, which are known for their extreme difficulty levels. However, Capcom intends to create a distinct experience focused on action and skill rather than relentless challenge.
Alongside the announcement of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Capcom also revealed a remastered version of Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, indicating that the company is committed to reinvigorating the Onimusha brand. As development progresses and if Onimusha: Way of the Sword achieves success, it could catalyze a renaissance for the franchise, potentially establishing a new benchmark in modern action gaming.
