Pokemon TCG Pocket is gearing up for its next expansion, Space-Time Smackdown, which is scheduled for release on January 29. This highly anticipated set will spotlight Generation 4 Pokémon, introducing prominent characters like Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup, along with the legendary duo Dialga and Palkia. Among the various offerings, the Metal-type cards, particularly with the introduction of Dialga EX, are poised to elevate their presence in the game’s competitive landscape.
Dialga EX: Set to Redefine Metal-Type Play in Pokemon TCG Pocket

The Need for Metal-Type Upgrades in Pokemon TCG Pocket
Initially, Pokemon TCG Pocket launched with Genetic Apex, which primarily featured Generation 1 Pokémon, resulting in a scarcity of Metal-type cards. Since the Steel type debuted in Generation 2, the game has struggled to integrate robust Metal-type options. Even the recent Mythical Island expansion, focused primarily on Gen 2 Pokémon, failed to introduce significant Metal-type additions. Currently, players are limited to a few Metal-type cards, including:
- Time off
- Pawniard
- Bisharp
- Meltan
- Melmetal
Among these, Melmetal serves as the strongest choice, providing a foundation for competitive decks. However, given that EX cards dominate in strength, the absence of a powerful Metal-type option has hindered the viability of many decks. The arrival of Dialga EX not only strengthens the Metal type but positions it as a valuable asset in the evolving meta of Pokemon TCG Pocket.
Key Features of Dialga EX
Dialga EX boasts an impressive 150 HP and a modest retreat cost of just two energy, providing it with durability, while still allowing for strategic retreats using Trainer Cards such as X Speed or Leaf. Its Heavy Impact attack delivers a solid 100 damage, effectively countering opposing EX Pokémon before they can become major threats, despite its relatively high 4-energy cost.
Expanding Possibilities: Potential for Dual-Type Decks
What truly sets Dialga EX apart is its Metallic Turbo attack, which permits players to attach two Metal energy cards to any of their Benched Pokémon. This strategic energy manipulation is paramount for success in battles, providing a tactical edge to the user. Players can exploit this feature to charge up a second Dialga EX over two turns, allowing for a quick swap to unleash Heavy Impact effectively.
Even more intriguingly, the Metallic Turbo does not limit energy attachment to Metal-type Pokémon, broadening the potential for creating dual-type decks. A compelling strategy could involve pairing Metal types with Colorless types, enabling players to take full advantage of Dialga EX’s energy acceleration. By incorporating Pokémon like Venusaur EX, which requires Colorless energy, players can construct versatile decks that integrate Metal and other types, enriching gameplay and strategic depth.
