Gaban’s intriguing role in this arc has drawn significant attention from fans.
Although much of his true strength remains undisclosed, the glimpses we’ve received demonstrate that Scopper Gaban stands out as a truly formidable fighter with unparalleled power.
The Legend of Scopper Gaban, the Mountain Eater

- Scopper Gaban intervened to save Roger’s life.
- He effortlessly eliminated hundreds of pirates in a single day.
Scopper Gaban has been part of the One Piece realm since chapter 19, though he gained further recognition through Oda’s Blue Deep data book. His most notable appearance came during the Strong World special chapter, where he fought alongside legends like Roger and Rayleigh aboard the Oro Jackson.
In the ongoing narrative, Luffy and Zoro’s encounters have shed more light on Gaban’s past, including his heroic feats alongside the Pirate King. Set in the lore of Elbaf, Gaban’s mythic status as “Mountain Eater” arose from an incident where he defended Roger against countless adversaries while escorting him to receive medical treatment; single-handedly, Gaban dispatched hundreds at a single strike using his axes, leaving the battlefield in ruins.

Until chapter 1140, readers had yet to witness Gaban’s true combat prowess. The latest installments hint at power levels that far exceed current expectations.
Gaban’s Strength in Elbaf

Chapter 1140 marked the first significant display of Scopper Gaban’s might. When Luffy and Zoro sought to claim the key to Loki’s chains, Gaban didn’t make it easy; instead, he playfully challenged them. Their ensuing clash showcased Gaban’s remarkable agility and skill, as he effortlessly evaded Luffy’s serious attempts to seize the key.
“You sure chatter a lot, boy!”— Scopper Gaban to Luffy.
Conqueror’s Haki
Once Luffy intensified his efforts, Gaban similarly stepped up his game. A remarkable moment arose when Gaban demonstrated his Conqueror’s Haki by infusing it into the key, which manifested as dazzling trails of lightning. The striking effect of this power was clear as black lightning surged upon impact with Luffy, confirming Gaban’s mastery of this formidable ability.
Incredible Axemanship
If Gaban’s Conqueror’s Haki was not enough to establish his dominance, his skill with axes certainly would. In chapter 1130, Gaban revealed his astounding axemanship as he unleashed a series of devastating axe slashes that obliterated a substantial section of Aurust Castle, which is akin in size to a city. Such raw power signifies Gaban’s capabilities; both Luffy and Zoro acknowledged that they would have perished without their swift reflexes.
Assessing Scopper Gaban’s Strength
Gaban: A Yonko-Level Character

Currently, it is undeniable that Scopper Gaban ranks at Yonko level, even in his later years. He remains a legendary figure, exhibiting exceptional strength. However, given his age, he may not surpass formidable contemporaries like Shanks or Blackbeard. Yet, one must consider his prime; Gaban was undoubtedly on par with the strongest fighters in the One Piece universe, including Roger, Garp, Whitebeard, and Rayleigh, making him a force to be reckoned with against today’s Yonko.
Although Gaban has momentarily stepped away from the conflict involving Luffy and Zoro, fans are hopeful for his return as the battle escalates, especially with the Holy Knights entering the fray in Elbaf.
Fans can read One Piece through Viz Media, and it’s available for free on the Shonen Jump and Manga Plus applications. The release date for the next chapter, One Piece 1140, is set for February 23, 2025.
