The One Piece voice actors have collaborated for over 25 years, cultivating a rare and enduring friendship in the anime industry. This long-term association has endeared the actors to fans globally as they consistently voice their esteemed characters. Recently, Tanaka celebrated her 70th birthday on January 15, further highlighting the deep-rooted connections among the cast, many of whom have gained fame through various anime roles, including Tanaka’s portrayals of several characters in Dragon Ball.
Remarkably, none of the primary Straw Hats have been recast over the decades. However, it’s with a heavy heart that Kazuki Yao, the voice actor for Franky, announced his retirement from the series following the end of 2024. He expressed his emotions poignantly: “The time has come for me to give a sad farewell, ” Yao reflected.“It is almost an out-of-body experience. I feel a gap has emerged between myself and the Franky I know. So I’ve decided to get off of the [Thousand] Sunny.”
Subaru Kimura has been named as Yao’s successor for the role of Franky. Kimura is recognized among Western audiences as the Japanese voice behind Aoi Todo in Jujutsu Kaisen. Yao’s departure was filled with sentimental farewells at Jump Festa 2025, where Yao expressed his sadness and gratitude. He boldly stated, “We have found a super replacement. Look forward to the announcement…” It was a touching farewell amongst fans, reminiscent of how the Straw Hats would support each other, emphasizing the cast’s resonant connection with their audience.

The initial phase of the Egghead Island arc showcased the Straw Hats’ evolution into a Yonko crew following their victory over the Beast Pirates. It also made way for Dr. Vegapunk’s first appearance — a significant character mentioned throughout the series since the Post-Enies Lobby arc. Fans are particularly eager for the rematch between Luffy and Rob Lucci, a duel with a history dating back to their last encounter at Enies Lobby.
Interest in the unfolding events of Egghead remains high among both anime viewers and seasoned manga readers. This arc is distinct in its narrative structure, deviating from traditional arcs that typically focus exclusively on Luffy and the Straw Hats. Author Eiichiro Oda has confirmed that this storyline forms part of the final saga of One Piece, fan excitement has grown due to glimpses into the actions of Trafalgar Law, Eustass Kid, Koby, the Marines, and Blackbeard’s crews while Luffy’s group remains on hold.
