The journey of Armor Wars has been lengthy and complicated. Don Cheadle first hinted at a potential War Machine film back in 2011, and discussions resurfaced around 2019. By 2020, however, Marvel’s direction shifted significantly when Kevin Feige announced that Armor Wars would transition from a film to a Disney+ series, aimed at following the success of other MCU installments like WandaVision. This announcement fueled expectations, but as numerous other projects gained momentum, Armor Wars seemed to stall. Although the project was subsequently upgraded to a theatrical release, there has been minimal movement on its production front. Recently, Nate Moore, a producer at Marvel Studios, broke the silence on the status of Armor Wars in an interview with Collider. While discussing the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World, Moore elaborated on the current state of the Armor Wars project.“You know, that’s not my project, to be honest, ” he noted.“But I do know that as Marvel [Studios] proceeds through this phase, we want to ensure that everything we produce is exceptional. This approach may lead to a slowdown in some projects that were previously prioritized. It doesn’t imply that the project is canceled, but our focus must be on quality assurance for every release.”

Moore’s statements carry weight, especially considering his previous ties to both Armor Wars and Captain America: Brave New World. However, he is concluding his lengthy tenure at Marvel Studios, leaving behind his position as VP of Production & Development. Moore will remain involved in promoting the new Captain America film and the anticipated Black Panther 3. His departure from overseeing stalled projects suggests a potential reshuffling of priorities within the studio. Still, his recent comments could provide the most substantial update about Armor Wars that fans have had in quite some time.

Further supporting Moore’s insights, recent statements from industry insider Daniel Richtman indicated that the project has not been canceled but is on hold. This is reportedly due, in part, to negative reactions to Secret Invasion. Additionally, it appears unlikely that any progress will occur until after the upcoming Avengers films are released. While the project facing delays is certainly preferable to outright cancellation, it raises questions about its future compared to other new projects like Agatha All Along, which was announced later but has already completed production and is available on Disney+.

The project holds significant potential to reinstill faith in fans, particularly regarding Cheadle’s portrayal of Rhodey after the backlash from Secret Invasion.
