Mark your calendars: the budget-friendly Zen 5 Ryzen 9000 CPU is set to launch on September 16. AMD has recently released several slides that provide valuable insights into the CPU’s anticipated performance and the enhancements it brings compared to its predecessors.
Launch Update: Zen 5 Ryzen 5 9500F – Affordable 6-Core/12-Thread CPU
In a quiet announcement yesterday, AMD introduced the Ryzen 5 9500F, the slowest and most affordable option in the Ryzen 9000 series. This CPU, based on the Zen 5 architecture, lacks integrated graphics but closely mirrors the specifications of the Ryzen 5 9600 and 9600X, differing primarily in terms of boost clock speeds. The official release date is slated for just a week away, on September 16.

The Ryzen 5 9500F features a configuration of 6 cores and 12 threads, with a base clock speed of 3.8 GHz and a maximum boost clock reaching up to 5.0 GHz. While it operates at 400 MHz slower than the 9600X, it matches its specifications in terms of L2+L3 cache size and maintains a thermal design power (TDP) of 65W. As the successor to the Ryzen 5 7500F, it offers improvements through its advanced Zen 5 architecture, which AMD claims enhances gaming performance markedly.

According to the slides released by AMD, the Ryzen 5 9500F shows up to a 24% performance increase in AAA titles like Baldur’s Gate 3, with an average uplift of 9% across various AAA games. Certain titles such as F1 2023 and Black Myth: Wukong reported minor performance declines, yet impressive gains were noted in games like Elden Ring, Watch Dogs: Legion, and Far Cry 6. The CPU also delivers an average of 11% higher performance in competitive gaming settings across 10 different titles.
Performance testing was conducted at 1080p resolution with high graphical settings. However, it’s essential to remember that these results are based on AMD’s internal testing, and actual outcomes may differ. For instance, third-party benchmarks from Bilibili (via @9550pro) indicate that the Ryzen 5 9500F is approximately 3.5% faster than the 7500F when utilized alongside a GeForce RTX 5080, although these tests utilized dynamic resolution scaling.

Interestingly, the majority of the performance advantages are attributed to just two games: DOTA 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. While overall performance is promising, many games may yield negligible differences in real-world scenarios. Pricing for the Ryzen 5 9500F is set at 1, 299 Yuan (approximately US$181 excluding taxes), making it just $20 less than the suggested retail price of the Ryzen 5 9600X in China. Thus, while it presents a budget alternative, it may not be an ideal substitute for the slightly more powerful 9600X, which also includes integrated graphics.
