Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Announced at Anime Expo
At the recent Anime Expo held in Los Angeles, CD PROJEKT RED, in collaboration with acclaimed studio TRIGGER, revealed plans for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. This announcement marks a significant departure from comments made back in October 2022, indicating a renewed commitment to expanding the Cyberpunk universe. The upcoming series, comprised of 10 episodes, will stand as a separate narrative set within the vibrant world of Cyberpunk 2077.
New Adventures in Night City
Bartosz Sztybor, a celebrated Hugo Award-winning writer, will serve as the showrunner, story writer, and producer for the new series. In his statement, Sztybor expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating:
David’s story might be over, but there’s plenty more to discover in Night City. And to again have the legendary animation studio TRIGGER along for the ride makes us at CD PROJEKT RED so excited to introduce a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike what we’ve done before.
Creative Team Behind Edgerunners 2
Joining Sztybor in this venture is a talented crew, including lead character designer Kanno Ichigo, known for her work on Promare and the original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Masahiko Otsuka, famed for titles like Gurren Lagann and Promare, who will contribute to the screenplay adaptation. While the release date on Netflix remains unannounced, anticipation is already building among fans.
Reflecting on Edgerunners’ Impact
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which debuted in September 2022, received widespread acclaim, achieving a perfect 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This success significantly revitalized interest in CD PROJEKT RED’s Cyberpunk 2077. Coinciding with the animation’s release, the studio launched Patch 1.6, which introduced the highly requested Wardrobe feature, enabled cross-progression across platforms, and added new missions and weapons. These updates not only enhanced the gameplay experience but also contributed to a resurgence in player engagement.
Future of Cyberpunk Content
As for the future of Cyberpunk 2077, it is currently uncertain whether CD PROJEKT RED plans to release additional game content alongside Edgerunners 2. Given that the studio is heavily invested in developing The Witcher 4, such expansions seem unlikely at this time. However, the enduring popularity of the Cyberpunk franchise leaves the door open for potential future initiatives.
