Obsidian’s classic spy RPG Alpha Protocol returns to sale thanks to GOG
Obsidian Entertainment is renowned for its RPGs such as Fallout New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, and The Outer Worlds. However, after years of being unavailable, one of their earlier projects has been resurrected. The GOG store recently revealed the return of the distinct spy thriller RPG Alpha Protocol, which is now available without any digital rights management. The re-release is also promoting improvements from the original version.
In the game, Michael Thorton is a newly recruited agent at Alpha Protocol, an American spy agency. Like many spy tales, Thorton is compelled to act independently and expose a large-scale plot to prevent a new cold war. Along with its stealth and action elements, the Obsidian RPG also challenges players to make difficult choices during their missions that can significantly affect the narrative.
In 2019, publisher SEGA removed the game from all stores due to the expiration of its music licenses.
“Upon embarking on our journey 15 years ago, one of our top priorities was to uphold our commitment to preserving games and ensuring their longevity,”states GOG in regards to this re-release. “We are pleased to say that we continue to uphold this mission, and are thrilled to announce the re-release of a beloved classic that has been successfully preserved in the GOG catalog, ready to be enjoyed once again.”
The store collaborated with SEGA and Obsidian Entertainment to achieve this feat. Alpha Protocol will now run smoothly on contemporary PCs without any additional modifications, and GOG has also implemented performance enhancements. Additionally, the game’s licensed soundtrack, which was the reason for its initial removal, is now fully restored.
The re-release includes all of the newly implemented features.
- Licensed soundtrack
- Achievements support
- Full controller support (Dualsense, DualShock 4, Nintendo Switch Pro, Xbox Series or Xbox One controller)
- Localization support
- Compatibility with modern operating systems
- Cloud saves support
