Latest Rumor on Obsidian’s Projects
Current reports suggest that Obsidian Entertainment is actively working on a sequel to Avowed. However, there appears to be no advancement on a potential third installment for The Outer Worlds. This rumor has emerged from comments made by Chris Avellone, a former co-founder of the studio, who indicated via Twitter:
Apparently, aside from DLC plans for Outer Worlds 2, it seems like Obsidian is making no plans for Outer Worlds 3 (but they are doing Avowed 2).
It is important to highlight that Avellone departed from the company about a decade ago due to disputes with CEO Feargus Urquhart, though he may still maintain some industry connections.
Avowed: A New Chapter for Obsidian
Avowed was launched on February 18, 2025, marking a prolific year for Obsidian, which also introduced Grounded 2 in early access. Offering an action RPG experience within the fantasy realm of Eora—previously showcased in the Pillars of Eternity series—Avowed has garnered positive critical acclaim. My assessment of the game resulted in a strong rating of 8.8 out of 10:
Avowed marks a significant step up for Obsidian compared to The Outer Worlds. The game retains the studio’s signature excellent writing and narrative while improving the combat (especially the challenge level) and providing a lot of great content to go through. The visuals and performance are also praiseworthy. There are a few shortcomings, but if you’re a fan of Western RPGs, you don’t want to miss Avowed. It may have started as a spin-off, but it could go on to be the main series in Eora.
Having also experienced The Outer Worlds 2, I find it to be a commendable RPG that improves upon its predecessor, reflected in David Carcasole’s review score of 8.5. That said, I favor Avowed slightly more, primarily due to its superior, more challenging combat and captivating companions. Thus, if I had to choose which sequel I’d prefer, Avowed would take precedence.
Future Developments at Obsidian
If it is indeed the case that Obsidian has no plans for The Outer Worlds 3, it opens the door for new projects. These could potentially include a high-budget title in the Pillars of Eternity franchise—something that Josh Sawyer has expressed interest in—or, more eagerly awaited by fans, a sequel to Fallout: New Vegas. In the past, Feargus Urquhart has not ruled out this possibility. While Bethesda seems hesitant about a sequel, there is speculation that Microsoft aims to expedite new entries in the Fallout franchise following the successful Amazon TV series. This could mean delegating the project to a sister studio while Bethesda is focused on The Elder Scrolls VI.
