Minecraft update 1.18: caves and rocks, part 2: features, release date, downloads and more

With the new 1.18 update, Minecraft is struggling to bring a ton of new features to its community. We have new biomes, mobs and a new generation of terrain. This update will also bring Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition closer to the identical generation of the world with the same seeds. There’s a lot to unpack here, and excitement grows as the 1.18 release date approaches.

But don’t worry, our team is ready to cover every important detail you might want to know about the new Minecraft 1.18 Caves and Cliffs part 2. We’ve already covered the best Minecraft 1.18 seeds for you to get ready for the next generation of the world. But that is not all. With an update just around the corner, let’s take a look at everything you can expect from the new Minecraft 1.18 Caves and Cliffs, Part 2. This includes a release date, new biomes, supported platforms, download links, and more.

Minecraft update 1.18 (caves and rocks, part 2): everything you need to know in 2021

The new Minecraft update 1.18 contains 8 new biomes, a new ore generation system, and realistic caves and rocks, as the name suggests. And these are just the main features that we learned about from Minecraft version 1.17. There are a few things we can talk about in this article, so let’s first understand the specifics of the update itself before moving on to the new features.

What is Minecraft 1.18 Caves & Cliffs Part 2 Update

In June 2021, Minecraft released an update to version 1.17 called Caves and Cliffs Part 1. It introduced minor but significant changes to the game, including new blocks, items, mobs, and plants. In addition to this, the Minecraft 1.18 update mainly focuses on the new generation of terrestrial and underground terrain in the game.

Minecraft is using both of these updates to answer complaints about boring underground exploration and repetitive stagnant world creation above ground. Prior to the Caves & Cliffs update, Minecraft offered caves that looked no better than random holes in the ground. Likewise, even the rocks in the game more or less did not exist.

Mojang and Microsoft decided to address these issues and use the two Cliffs & Caves updates as a chance to make big changes to the game. A prime example of such a big change is the addition of 8 new biomes to Minecraft 1.18. Unfortunately, there are a few new additions, such as the Deep Dark biome, that have been pushed back to update 1.19 due to development delays. Even without them, Minecraft 1.18 remains an update not to be missed.

Minecraft update 1.18 release date

For the PC version, based on experimental snapshots, we estimate the size of the Minecraft 1.18 update to be around 800MB or more if you are upgrading from 1.17. For the mobile version of the game, it may be smaller due to the limited space on these devices.

If you are using one of the supported platforms, you can buy and download the game prior to next week’s update:

2. Get Minecraft with Xbox Game Pass ($ 14.99 per month | 699 per month)

The same applies to Xbox downloads, iOS and iPadOS purchases, and the Windows Bedrock Edition game release.

New Biomes in Minecraft 1.18: Caves and Rocks, Part 2 Update

Now comes the part you’ve been waiting for. Minecraft 1.18 has tons of cool new features for you to try. Most of them, however, revolve around the new Minecraft biomes that are being added to the game. Luckily, the snapshots allowed us to test them all for you. Let’s take a look at what each of these biomes have to offer.

Lush caves

This is probably the most beautiful biome in Minecraft update 1.18, where berries glow and spores bloom. These caves come in a variety of sizes, but are easily identified by the greenery in them. The ceilings are covered with blooming spores, glowing berries and blocks of moss. Meanwhile, the floor is made up of blocks of moss, blooming azaleas, and lots of grass. You can also find ores in this biome such as coal and copper. Apart from moss blocks, you can also find stone blocks taking up a lot of space in this biome.

Drip Stone Caves

Unlike the lush caves, the Dripstone Caves are less colorful in this update. These caves are composed of stone, granite and stone blocks. There are no plants in this biome , but you can find pointed drip stones (which copy stalactites from real caves) in different sizes. In addition, there are several underwater caves that you can stumble upon in update 1.18. When it comes to ores, this biome contains the most copper.

A meadow is a mountain biome that occurs between mountains and hills. At first glance, this is a combination of lowland biomes and flower forests . You can also find flowers, grass, rabbits and sheep in this biome. If there are trees here, hives will usually spawn on them.

Despite the fact that Grove is a snow biome, it spawns in the same places as the meadow. Located at the foot of the hills, these biomes are covered in snow. As for the blocks, they consist of earth and stone blocks covered with snow and compacted ice . Spruces, foxes, rabbits and wolves can be found in this biome.

Frozen peaks

This biome gives us snowy mountains, but with even smoother slopes. In this biome, you can find snow and dense ice covering stone blocks. This biome focuses more on dense ice than snow . Goats often roam the area, so you can tame them or collect food and resources from them. What’s more, you can even find robber outposts in this new Minecraft 1.18 biome.

Jagged tops

Jagged Peak is the biome that really defines the rocks in this 1.18 update . This gives us realistic looking mountains made of stone and covered in snow when you reach the top. Unlike the snow-capped mountains, the world generation of this biome is not smooth but rather irregular. Snow powder usually does not appear in this biome.

Stony Peaks

Similar to snowy peaks, this biome has a rock on top of a mountain instead of snow. Mountains in this biome can be flat and smooth, or have irregular ups and downs. Although there is no snow here, goats can still be found in this biome. You can even find ore like coal at surface level (see screenshot) of this biome.

Snowy slopes

The latest new biome in Minecraft 1.18 is also the most popular cliff biome. This gives us beautiful but steep mountain peaks with lots of snow. There is even some snow piled on top of each other that can trap you. As far as mobs go, goats and rabbits are easy to find in this biome .

Unused biomes

As you’ll notice in our next section, the world generation of Minecraft has completely changed in the 1.18 update. One such change ensures that terrain elevation and biomes no longer affect each other. This means that the minor biomes that are created due to the height of the terrain will now become obsolete . These unused biomes include:

  • Badlands Plateau
  • Bamboo hills in the jungle, birch hills and dark forest hills
  • Deserted hills and lakes
  • Giant Spruce and Giant Tree Taiga Hills
  • Gravel mountains
  • Changed jungle edge and changed jungle
  • Modified Badlands Plateau and Wooded Badlands Plateau
  • Mountain edge
  • Mushroom Field Shore
  • Shattered Savannah Plateau
  • Snowy mountains and snowy taiga
  • Taiga hills and mountains
  • Various hill options including jungle, snowy taiga, tall birch, swamp, and wooded hills.

World Generation Changes in Minecraft 1.18 Update

In order to realize high views and a new underground system, the developers of Minecraft decided to completely change the generation of the world. While all of these changes are for the better, some of them can be a little cumbersome for your system. Fortunately, installing Optifine in Minecraft can help you increase your FPS and improve your performance. With that out of the way, let’s take a look at the changes of the new generation of the world in the Minecraft 1.18 update.

Terrain and biomes

The first major change is how landscapes are created in Minecraft 1.18. Terrain is a physical feature or a way to create sushi in the game. It includes mountains, hills and plateaus formed in the area. In earlier versions, the game focused more on biomes, and each biome had a limited variety of terrain. This is no longer the case.

Plains biome spawned in mountainous terrain is now prioritized for terrain generation. So, instead of having separate terrains, each Minecraft biome automatically adjusts to whatever terrain it sits on . This is the reason why you can now see plains and forest biomes spawning as mountains all over the world in Minecraft. The screenshot above is a prime example of a new generation of landscape-driven world.

World limit increased

For Minecraft Java and Bedrock versions, the total built height has been increased to 384 blocks. This means that there can now be 384 blocks between the lowest and highest point in the world of Minecraft . This expansion allows deeper caves and higher mountains to be easily formed.

The highest point at which you can place a block in Minecraft is now 320 blocks . It is also called the maximum block height. Meanwhile, the deepest point in front of the void is located at -64 blocks. It is known as the base layer of Minecraft. This extra depth means a complete change in ore generation, which we’ll cover later in this article.

Generating seeds

The seeds in Minecraft 1.18 use a new world random number generator. This means that the worlds you get each time will be more random than before. This also means that none of the best Minecraft seeds from earlier versions will look the same in this version. Fortunately, you also don’t have to search for Java and Bedrock Edition seeds separately after this update.

Other Important Changes in Minecraft Update 1.18: Caves and Rocks, Part 2

Biomes are the biggest feature that will delight most players in the new update. But that’s not all. Let’s take a look at each of the major new features that Minecraft 1.18 has to offer.

Java and Bedrock Compatibility

If you, like me, are not a fan of two separate editions of Minecraft, this update is perfect for you. One of the main ways Java and Bedrock Minecraft come together with the 1.18 update is world generation. Most Minecraft 1.18 seeds generate worlds that are very similar in both editions of the game. The worlds still won’t be exactly the same, but they won’t feel like two separate seeds. An example of this improved compatibility between Java and Bedrock versions can be seen below:

This is one of the most requested features in the game. Most professional gamers have been waiting for this since the launch of Minecraft Bedrock in 2011. The new Minecraft for Windows also marks both versions by providing them in the same game launcher. With this kind of progress, we can certainly look forward to a joint play between them in the coming years.

Advanced ore distribution

Due to changes in world boundaries and the introduction of new cave biomes, the distribution of ore in Minecraft has changed a lot. The most significant change is that ore veins or groups of multiple ore blocks now form longer chains.

Each ore has also undergone unique, individual changes. Let’s take a look at each of them to better understand the new ora system:

  • Diamond ore now only generates below Y = 16. They are generated in more clusters and more near the bedrock at Y = -64.
  • Coal ores also form underground on mountain tops. You can find them at heights ranging from Y = 256 to Y = 0.
  • Copper ores also have a varied formation range from Y = -16 to Y = 112. You can also find them in drippers and lush caves.
  • Popular iron ores are generated in various locations in Minecraft 1.18, ranging from Y = -32 to Y = 256. Its quantity and chances of spawning vary greatly at different altitudes. Most iron can be found at Y = 56.
  • Gold ores usually form between Y = -64 and Y = 32. Keep in mind that you can find more gold in the Badlands biome. There it appears between Y = 79 and Y = 256.
  • Reduced ores are formed between Y = -32 and Y = -64. You may find it generates closest to the bedrock level, often near diamond ores.
  • The least popular, but equally important, emerald ore has an inverse relationship with height. Its generation decreases as you go deeper. It is usually generated between Y = -16 and Y = 256.
  • Finally, lapis lazuli ore generates between Y = -64 and 32. Unlike earlier versions of the game, this is no longer a rarity in the global generation.

New music in Minecraft 1.18

As for the music that we can manually use in the game, there is only one new addition here. The update adds a new blue and green ringed music disc called The Other Side . Fortunately, there is more to come. Minecraft offers us a lot of new in-game music that you will notice right from the main menu. And, as with every new biome, Minecraft gives us new music for each of the new playable biomes.

The tracks are titled Comforting Memories, One More Day, Wending, Stand Tall, Left to Bloom, Infinite Amethyst, One More Day, Floating Dream and An Ordinary. Day”. These 8 new music tracks will also play randomly in the main menu. Meanwhile, you can listen to each of them in different new biomes. Some even have overlapping biomes, so you will hear music randomly selected by the game.

Other minor but important changes and additions

  • The new spawn algorithm ensures that the player does not spawn in the ocean, lava or similar awkward places .
  • The Java version has a new “/ jfr” command that records in-game events such as chunk generation, server traffic, and load times, among others.
  • There are also new in-game achievements , including Caves and Rocks, Feel At Home, Star Trader, and Sounds of Music.
  • You can find robber outposts in almost any mountain biome. Most of what we noticed was in Glacial Peaks.
  • The Java version debug screen (“F3 key”) now also shows information about terrain, biome builder and multi-noise, including biome placement specifics.
  • The settings also received several new options such as the chunk builder, light switch, audio outpost, and simulation distance.
  • Video settings have been enabled / disabled with autosave indicator for single user mode.
  • As with any update, there are dozens of minor texture changes and the appearance of multiple blocks, mobs, and structures. You can even find hundreds of bug fixes in the logs of this update.
