In the realm of Oblivion Remastered, every legendary hero requires a weapon of equal renown. Tamriel is rich in an array of exquisite swords, staffs, and other formidable armaments essential for closing the gates to Oblivion. However, with the multitude of options scattered throughout Cyrodiil, selecting the right weapon can prove challenging.
While it’s easy to get accustomed to a random enchanted weapon discovered in a reward chest or obtained through quests, several exceptional weapons can be acquired early in Oblivion Remastered. These treasures are always accessible, merely waiting for you to claim them.
As the narrative intensifies and the adversity grows, your character will require a weapon that can deliver significant impact, surpassing the makeshift options you might conjure through crafting or random chance. Luckily, some impressive weapons can be reliably sourced from quests, eliminating the need to depend on smithing, enchanting, or luck.
This guide assumes you will focus on a melee character. Since staffs are not particularly effective in Oblivion, a dedicated mage build utilizing spells is more beneficial. Moreover, given that Oblivion predates the overpowering stealth archery builds of Skyrim, those looking for marksmanship should refer to a separate guide dedicated to the best bows and builds.
Below, I outline the best weapons you can acquire throughout the various stages of Oblivion Remastered: early game, mid-game, and late-game.
Be advised, this guide contains spoilers regarding the outcomes of certain early side quests and the locations of Daedric Artifacts. I’ll aim to keep these revelations minimal to preserve surprise where possible.
Top Weapons in Oblivion Remastered
Below is an interactive map pinpointing the locations of our selected top weapons in Oblivion Remastered, followed by an in-depth discussion on their qualities:
On this page:
Chillrend
Upon exiting the sewers beneath the Imperial City, your first quest involves traveling northwest to the outskirts of Chorrol to meet Jeauffre at Weynon Priory. This journey not only grants you your first horse but also a unique weapon.
Inside the pub called The Grey Mare, speak with Valus Odiil, who will request your assistance in defending his farmstead from a band of goblins. Accept the quest and meet Antus and Rallus just beyond the town walls.
Before proceeding to the farm, save your game. After defeating the goblins and returning victorious, if both brothers survive, you will receive Chillrend, an enchanted weapon that deals ice damage. Should either brother fall during the skirmish, reload your save and retry, as their father will refuse to reward you in such a scenario.
Chillrend scales in damage and effect with your level, making it a wise early-game acquisition despite stronger weapon options later.
Bands of Kwang Lao
For an innovative melee approach, consider utilizing the Hand to Hand skill, which is highly effective right from the start, especially with the Bands of Kwang Lao. These unique handwraps enhance your Hand to Hand skill by 20 points, providing an immediate boost in damage.
To acquire them, head to the Arena District in the Imperial City. Instead of entering the arena, find two aspiring fighters sparring near the entrance. In their makeshift camp is a locked chest containing the Bands of Kwang Lao.
For those aiming for these handwraps early on, make a save prior to attempting to unlock the chest, as it can be a challenge. Alternatively, you might opt to pickpocket the key from Branwen, the Redguard fighter, again making a save just in case you need to reload after a failed attempt.
Redwave
For those preferring traditional swords, Redwave stands out as an excellent early-game weapon with consistent power that does not scale with your level. Travel to the coastal city of Anvil and find Varulae on The Serpent’s Wake. She will task you with retrieving a crystal ball from a haunted ship in the docks.
Depending on your character’s strength or the difficulty setting, you can either combat the foes inside the haunted ship or sneak in and grab what you need before retreating to safety. Either way, Varulae will reward you with Redwave, a pirate’s cutlass that not only delivers reliable damage but also inflicts health loss over time.
Blackwater Blade
Another early-game sword you can obtain is the Blackwater Blade. Simply spend the night at the Bloated Float Inn in the Imperial Docks. Without giving away too much detail, you will end up receiving this powerful longsword, which absorbs fatigue from opponents, ensuring that you remain energized as your adversaries grow weaker.
Complete change
As you progress into mid-game, it’s time to pursue Daedric Artifacts. After reaching level 10, head to Malacath’s Shrine located north of Anvil. The quest here is relatively straightforward and culminates in acquiring Volendrung, a two-handed hammer that inflicts solid damage, drains health over time, and can incapacitate foes for three seconds—an invaluable asset in combat.
Recognizing the power of this legendary hammer, Orcs throughout Cyrodiil will refer to you by the name “Volendrung, ”acknowledging your achievement.
Ebony Blade
Next, after reaching level 15, seek out Mephala’s Ebony Blade. The corresponding Daedric Shrine is located northeast of the Imperial City. This katana is capable of delivering high damage while also absorbing health and silencing enemies—making it particularly effective against spellcasters.
Shading
As your journey nears its conclusion, you should seek out Umbra, the highest base damage one-handed weapon available in Oblivion Remastered. Even if you can enchant weapons of your own, Umbra remains formidable due to its built-in Soul Trap enchantment, perfect for recharging your enchanted gear.
To acquire Umbra, visit Clavicus Vile’s shrine to the southwest of the Imperial City after reaching level 20. However, be warned that claiming Umbra will mean forgoing the Masque of Clavicus Vile, which provides a substantial Personality boost of 20 points.
Should the Remastered edition bring forth any new weapons or surprises down the line, we will promptly update this list to reflect those additions.
