Oblivion Remastered: A Comprehensive Guide to the Brotherhood Betrayed Quest

In the serene city of Bruma, players can embark on the intriguing A Brotherhood Betrayed quest in Oblivion Remastered. Initial conversations around town unveil unsettling rumors about Bradon Lirrian, who was supposedly a vampire. His demise came at the hands of the courageous vampire hunter, Raynil Dralas, who vowed to cleanse Bruma of this terrifying threat.

Yet, the entire situation raises questions. Many attest to Bradon’s character as a good-natured individual, and his wife was completely unaware of his alleged affliction. This contradiction compels you to undertake an investigation of your own.

The Quest Overview: A Brotherhood Betrayed

You can start your journey at Bradon Lirrian’s residence, conveniently located next to where Ongar the World-Weary can be found during the Independent Thievery quest. The crime scene remains largely undisturbed, waiting for a curious adventurer to delve deeper.

Upon entering, you encounter Carius Runellius, the Imperial guard overseeing this case. When you inquire about Raynil, he dismisses you initially, labeling the case as straightforward and expressing reluctance to discuss particulars with a stranger.

Your persuasion skills will come into play here; aim to increase his disposition to 70 using charm or bribes. Personally, I found that flattery and boasting worked best.

Once you earn Carius’s trust, he provides crucial insights. Some time ago, shallow graves were discovered outside of town, filled with the bodies of vagrants replete with classic vampire bite marks. Shortly thereafter, Raynil appeared, offering his services to track down the lurking monster. He allegedly traced the vampire to Bradon, a man often spotted roaming Bruma’s streets after dark.

Carius departs but encourages you to continue asking questions around town if you feel it could lead to new revelations.

If you initially investigate the crime scene, you’ll be met with a warning against disturbing Bradon’s remains; however, a chat with his widow, Erline Lirrian, proves much more fruitful.

Erline recounts a harrowing experience of discovering Raynil in the act of slaying her husband, adding that another corpse, that of a homeless man, was unearthed in their basement—evidence that seems quite damning.

Still, she insists that the body was conveniently planted and points out several inconsistencies. Why would the supposed vampire hunter stash a body in their home while leaving others buried outside? Moreover, given Bradon’s night shifts, it stands to reason that he would be asleep during the day. Finally, she reveals that Raynil seems oddly familiar to her, hinting they may have crossed paths before.

After speaking to Carius again, he confirms Erline was not a vampire, which raises further doubts about Raynil’s claims. It seems imperative to track down this elusive hunter—assuming he hasn’t fled Bruma.

Stepping out into the brisk Northern air, you might consider heading to the local pub to gather more information.

Your destination is Olav’s Tap and Tack, located by the south gate. Engage the innkeeper, Olav, in conversation about Bradon, and you’ll sense he’s not entirely forthcoming.

Olav appears to have more information but is hesitant to share anything about Raynil with a stranger. This presents another opportunity to flex your persuasion skills; humor and a bit of intimidation work wonders. Once his disposition reaches 70, he readily provides you with the key to Raynil’s room upstairs.

Inside the room at the end of the lodging floor, peek behind the drawers on your right to uncover Gelebourne’s Journal, an enlightening find that significantly advances the narrative.

This journal reveals that both Bradon and Raynil were once part of an adventuring team that stumbled upon a mysterious artifact in an Ayleid ruin. They hid it in a cave close to Bruma, each taking a key to the heavily secured chest where it was stored.

With this new evidence, return to Olav and inquire about Gelebourne. Olav recalls hearing the name from Raynil, who boasted that it belonged to the last vampire he hunted in Skingrad.

With Raynil’s deceit uncovered, return to Carius at the Lirrian household. Furious and humiliated for having been misled, Carius vows to organize a search party to apprehend the faux hunter, instructing you to meet him at Olav’s pub in about an hour.

As time passes, Carius bursts into the tavern, sharing that a scout spotted Raynil heading west toward Boreal Stone Cave. This quest is one of the few timed events in Oblivion Remastered, granting you a mere 24 in-game hours to locate this vampire hunter before he disappears.

Exit through the north gate of Bruma and venture into the Jerall Mountains, then navigate westward through the wilderness, past Capstone Cave, Applewatch, and Rielle, until you ultimately reach Boreal Stone Cave.

Upon entering, Raynil confronts you with a dramatic monologue before initiating a battle. He’s a formidable opponent, adept in both spellcasting and melee combat, combining lethal two-handed strikes with magical enhancements. However, like other adversaries in Oblivion, the right weapons make this fight manageable.

Defeating Raynil yields his notable sword—often the first of its kind players encounter—along with the three keys to the concealed chest.

Inside the damp chest lies a seemingly ordinary amulet—not quite the treasure you’d expect from such devious schemes. However, this item may provide a glimmer of hope for Erline, knowing how excited Bradon was about it.

Your next step is to return to Erline at the Lirrian household. Her relief at the resolution is palpable, though it is bittersweet as nothing can bring back her beloved husband. Remarkably, the amulet conceals a hidden enchantment, a testament to Bradon’s foresight amid treachery.

As gratitude for delivering justice, Erline presents you with the restored amulet, wishing you luck on your journey—just as Bradon once did with his adventurous companions.

While you’re in Bruma, consider visiting Frostcrag Spire, one of the player-owned residences in Oblivion Remastered for an enriching diversion.
