NVIDIA has unveiled its ambitious plans for the design of the “Founders Edition”GeForce RTX 5090 GPU, stating that crafting this GPU posed a seemingly impossible challenge. However, Team Green has successfully brought this concept to fruition.

The recent official unboxing of the GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition (FE) has certainly turned heads, highlighting a design and form factor that is quite remarkable. This FE model not only complies with Small Form Factor (SFF) standards but also features a two-slot design. A standout point is the generational leap in architecture; NVIDIA has succeeded in reducing the RTX 5090’s dimensions by a staggering 40%. This prompts intrigue about the innovations brewing at NVIDIA’s headquarters.

In an insightful video presentation, NVIDIA’s engineers discussed the journey of developing the new FE model, sharing that the initial perception was that reducing its size was nearly impossible given the inclusion of advanced components. They explored the evolution of cooling technology from the original GeForce series through to the Blackwell generation, revealing discussions about a previously considered “triple-fan”model which, despite its design complexities, was ultimately not produced.

This exploration led NVIDIA to adopt a “Two-Thirds”design principle, effectively shrinking the PCB by a remarkable two-thirds compared to earlier models. Despite the challenges associated with this complex design shift, the engineering team persevered through extensive testing and creative brainstorming. This culminated in a “modular”approach, dividing the PCB into several components—termed a “multi-layer”PCB—which includes the main board, a PCIe daughter board, an I/O daughter board, and a flexible board that connects the layers.

However, this segmented PCB posed some challenges, particularly related to industry standards for display connectors such as DP 2.1, which are tailored for single-layer PCBs. To overcome this hurdle, NVIDIA incorporated glass fibers into their substrates, effectively bridging the gap created by the segmented approach. An intriguing feature is the airtight seal surrounding the GPU die that employs NVIDIA’s advanced liquid metal interface, enhancing thermal management—a detail that will surely interest hardware teardown specialists.
