NVIDIA’s RTX 6000D: A Missed Opportunity in the Chinese AI Market
The RTX 6000D, NVIDIA’s first Blackwell-based GPU designed specifically for the Chinese market, was anticipated to be a game changer. However, it appears that many major companies in China are sidestepping orders, primarily due to concerns regarding the GPU’s performance. As highlighted in a Reuters report, firms have access to superior computational alternatives, whether through grey market channels or existing inventories, rendering the RTX 6000D less appealing.
Equipped with GDDR7 memory and utilizing TSMC’s cutting-edge 4nm process, the RTX 6000D boasts an impressive bandwidth of approximately 1, 100GB/s. Despite earlier projections of selling two million units to offset losses from the H20 AI chip, NVIDIA’s current situation reveals significant challenges in gaining traction in the Chinese market. This situation highlights ongoing hopes among Chinese tech leaders for the processing of their H20 AI chip orders, contingent upon pending regulatory approvals.

Looking ahead, NVIDIA appears to be pivoting towards selling its B30A AI chips to Chinese customers. This upcoming product also utilizes the Blackwell architecture and TSMC’s 4nm technology. The B30A features an 8-Hi HBM3E memory and a dual-chiplet design, which is expected to offer significant performance improvements compared to the H20. However, the timeline for releasing these competitive solutions largely hinges on NVIDIA’s ability to negotiate with the U. S.government effectively—a considerable challenge given the current geopolitical landscape.
