The NVIDIA Blackwell RTX 50 series GPUs are progressively gaining ground on the Steam hardware charts. However, they still have a considerable distance to cover before the top contenders in the RTX 50 lineup can penetrate the coveted top 10 positions.
NVIDIA’s RTX 50 Series: Climbing Popularity on Steam
According to the recently released Steam Hardware Survey for August, intriguing insights have emerged regarding the popularity of various graphics cards. It’s important to note that the Steam Hardware Survey may not represent the definitive best-sellers, as its participation is voluntary and reflects only the hardware of users who opt in. Consistently, the previous-generation GeForce RTX 4060 continues to lead the charts, a trend that has persisted for several months.
Additionally, the rankings are still dominated by older models, such as the RTX 40 series, RTX 30 series, and even GPUs from the Turing generation. This suggests a trend where many gamers stick with their existing GPUs from past years and hesitate to upgrade to the latest RTX 50 offerings or the RX 9000 series for a variety of reasons.

This August, the GeForce RTX 5070 became the most popular RTX 50 series GPU, now holding the 19th position in the overall rankings on Steam. It has not only gained significant traction on the survey but is also highly sought after on major retail platforms like Amazon.

The RTX 5070 has realized a share increase of 0.25%, bringing its total market share to 1.57%.However, it’s essential to highlight that the RTX 5060 exhibited an even more significant growth, with a 0.41% rise in August, making it the fastest-growing GPU among the listed options (second only to the RTX 4060).This budget-friendly GPU now boasts a market share of 1.01%.

With an appealing price point of approximately $300 and an 8 GB VRAM capacity, the RTX 5060 represents a compelling choice for gamers seeking a strong performance upgrade over older models like the RTX 4060 and RTX 3060. Notably, the 8 GB VRAM configuration remains the most popular among Steam users, capturing a considerable 35.03% of the market. This segment also experienced a 1.37% share growth in August, far surpassing the 6.80% market share held by 16 GB cards and 19.30% for 12 GB models.

Meanwhile, AMD’s RDNA 4-based Radeon RX 9000 series GPUs, including the RX 9070 XT and RX 9060 XT (16 GB), have been notably absent from the survey for several months. Despite their popularity, their absence does not imply lesser interest than NVIDIA’s RTX 50 series. Generally, there was a noticeable improvement in the market share of most RTX 50 GPUs last month, a trend likely to persist as older models vanish from store shelves and newer products take their place.
On the CPU front, the dominance of 6-core CPUs is evident as they captured a significant 30.64% of the market share, marking them as the preferred choice among gamers and general users alike. In terms of operating systems, Windows 11 remains the leading OS, now accounting for 63.18% of the share, reflecting a 0.28% growth since last month.
