NVIDIA’s latest graphics card, the “China-specific”GeForce RTX 5090D, is facing potential export restrictions due to new regulations implemented by the U. S.administration. This move follows a series of tightening trade policies aimed at technology exports to China.
NVIDIA Suspends Sales of the GeForce RTX 5090D Amid Escalating U. S.-China Tensions
The tech landscape in China has been under strain in recent quarters, driven by shifting export policies that seem to change almost monthly. Following the U. S.government’s decision to prohibit the sale of NVIDIA’s H20 AI accelerators in the Chinese market, attention has now shifted to the RTX 5090D. According to reports from Chiphell, NVIDIA has temporarily halted sales of this flagship Blackwell GPU in China and has instructed its add-in board (AIB) partners to stop sales as well.
Although NVIDIA has not officially clarified the reason for this sales suspension, sources suggest that the decision is a “precautionary”measure in light of the ongoing geopolitical situation between the U. S.and China. This scenario mirrors the challenges NVIDIA faced previously with their A100 and H100 AI accelerators, where uncertainty surrounding the status of the GeForce RTX 4090 eventually led to a sales ban. To avoid similar confusion, NVIDIA appears to be taking a proactive approach by ceasing the production of the RTX 5090D for the Chinese market.

Even without an official announcement, reports indicate that AIBs such as Colorful and Palit have already suspended their sales of the RTX 5090D. According to Benchlife, a manufacturer providing cooling solutions for the RTX 5090D also received guidance to halt material preparations, indicating that the supply chain is bracing for a possible ban. This development is particularly disappointing for gamers in China, as the RTX 5090D represents NVIDIA’s sole flagship GPU available in the region.
NVIDIA continues to experience significant financial repercussions from current export restrictions, with losses projected in the billions from the H20 ban. The impending prohibitions on the RTX 5090D could further jeopardize NVIDIA’s standing in the market, allowing competitors like AMD to capitalize on the situation. AMD is reportedly in the process of launching a China-specific alternative, the Radeon RX 9070 GRE, signaling a potential shift in market dynamics and highlighting the risks facing NVIDIA’s market share.
