In the second quarter of 2025, PC GPU shipments soared to an impressive 74.7 million units, with NVIDIA significantly outperforming its competitors, AMD and Intel.
PC GPU and CPU Shipments Q2 2025: NVIDIA’s Growing Dominance
According to Jon Peddie Research, NVIDIA’s ascent in the GPU market continues unabated, capturing a larger share as total worldwide GPU shipments reached 74.7 million units. In comparison, PC CPU shipments totaled 66.9 million units during the same period. The forecast indicates a compound annual decline of -2.9% for PC GPUs from 2025 to 2028, although the installed base could approach 3 billion units, specifically 2, 994 million, by the end of this forecast horizon. Discrete graphics cards are expected to achieve a market penetration of approximately 23% over the next five years.

A year-over-year analysis reveals a notable 4.9% increase in total PC GPU shipments for Q2 2025, driven by an 11% rise in desktop graphics card shipments and a smaller 2.5% increase in notebook shipments. This trend indicates a heightened demand for discrete graphics cards. Both NVIDIA and AMD introduced their latest graphics offerings, including the GeForce RTX 50 series and the Radeon RX 9000 series, which have benefitted from improved supply chains. While prices remain elevated, they are gradually normalizing, aligning closer to manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRPs).
Examining market share dynamics, both AMD and Intel experienced declines; AMD’s share dipped by 2.4% and Intel’s by 1.9% compared to the previous quarter. Conversely, NVIDIA’s market share surged to 24%, marking a significant 4.3% increase from the first quarter of 2025. This substantial growth underscores NVIDIA’s ability to outpace its rivals and capture a considerable portion of the market.

As discrete graphics cards made headway in Q2, it is anticipated that NVIDIA’s dominance in the dedicated GPU segment will be highlighted in upcoming reports. Earlier data from Q1 2025 suggested that NVIDIA held an overwhelming 92% market share, with competitors struggling to maintain a presence in the single digits.
- The overall GPU attach rate — encompassing integrated and discrete GPUs across desktops, notebooks, and workstations — rose to 112%, up by 0.5% from the previous quarter.
- The PC CPU market also experienced a notable year-on-year increase of 12.9%, coupled with a 7.9% rise from the previous quarter.

Shifting focus to the CPU sector, AMD saw a substantial increase in unit shipments, rising by 27%, while Intel managed a modest 2% gain. Overall, CPU shipments rose by 8% in this quarter, reflecting a 12.9% growth compared to the previous year and a 7.9% improvement from the prior quarter.
As of Q1 2025, desktop CPUs commanded a 33% market share, climbing from 29% in the preceding quarter and 24% a year earlier. In contrast, notebook CPUs accounted for 67% of the market, down from 71% in the last quarter and 76% year-over-year.
