NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series GPU Shortages: RTX 5090 & RTX 5080 Prices Have Doubled in Several Areas

The highly anticipated NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 and 5080 GPUs are facing significant supply constraints, leading to delays in shipments and price hikes in various markets.

Supply Chain Challenges Behind the Shortage of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs

Since the unveiling of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 series, numerous reports have surfaced indicating potential challenges in securing these graphics cards at launch. Recent updates confirm these concerns, highlighting the severe scarcity of the high-end RTX 5090 and 5080 models in the global market.

According to Benchlife, miscommunication between NVIDIA and its board partners has contributed significantly to this limited availability. This issue affects not only the RTX 5090 and 5080 but may also include the anticipated RTX 5070 models. It’s expected that stock levels might improve around the Spring Festival; however, consumers should not anticipate acquiring these GPUs at their manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) anytime soon.

On the NVIDIA side, we’ll see the GeForce RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 go on sale on January 30th, but we can confirm that there isn’t much supply in the market, mainly due to some communication issues between NVIDIA and AIC partners, as well as the Chinese New Year factor, which is expected to improve in February. In addition, we expect to see a GeForce RTX 5070 Ti on the road in mid-to-late February.

Another report from UDN underscores the acute shortage of the RTX 5090 and 5080, leading to drastic price increases in certain regions, particularly in China. Prices for these GPUs have reportedly reached nearly double their MSRPs, with the RTX 5090 fetching as much as $4000 and the RTX 5080 around $2000. Manufacturer partners like ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI are expected to reap significant benefits from these pricing trends.

This launch scenario represents a major challenge for consumers, with estimates suggesting that it may take weeks or even months before the GPUs return to their expected MSRPs. Currently, the RTX 5090 is listed at a steep price of $1999, with custom variants from AIBs (Add-In Board partners) priced even higher. Although these models are set to launch on January 30, some custom editions are already appearing on retail listings.

In the European market, consumers can expect even steeper prices due to added taxes, and the current limited supply indicates that a return to normal pricing is unlikely to happen rapidly.

Focusing on the North American market, UDN reports that initial stock levels are alarmingly low—with only 20 RTX 5080 units reportedly assigned for the first month and no RTX 5090 units made available at all. Such scarcity could persist through Q1 and even into Q2, contrasting sharply with the previous NVIDIA RTX 40 series launch where availability was comparatively robust.
