NVIDIA has made significant strides by announcing support for DLSS 4 across more than 100 games and applications, along with the introduction of Neural Shading capabilities in April 2025, specifically within the DirectX API framework.
NVIDIA DLSS 4: A New Horizon for Gaming Performance
During the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2025, NVIDIA showcased its latest software innovations, including the much-anticipated DLSS 4 and Neural Shading technology. With this launch, NVIDIA has solidified its commitment to enhancing gaming experiences, supporting over 100 titles and applications that leverage DLSS 4 technology.
DLSS 4 was initially introduced with the release of the RTX 50 series graphics cards earlier this year, marking a significant milestone in NVIDIA’s ongoing mission to deliver enhanced visual quality and performance. This updated generation of Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) features a new 4x frame-generation capability supported by Multi-Frame Generation (MFG) technology, alongside improved upscaling methods to elevate image quality compared to its predecessor, DLSS 3.

One of the standout aspects of DLSS 4 is its seamless upgrade process for developers currently using DLSS 3 or 3.x APIs in their games. NVIDIA’s expanding portfolio already includes exciting titles such as:
- Half-Life 2 RTX
- Lost Soul Aside
- Mecha BREAK
- Phantom Blade Zero
- Stellar Blade
- Tides of Annihilation
- Wild Assault
Recent comparisons demonstrate that the DLSS 4 (Transformer) model consistently outperforms the DLSS 3 quality preset, showcasing superior visual fidelity even when utilizing the performance preset. Although the Transformer model experiences a slight decrease in performance relative to the CNN model, the enhanced image quality positions it as the preferred choice for gamers.
In discussing the integration of DLSS 4, NVIDIA emphasized the importance of collaborating with game developers and partners to ensure high-quality standards are met, thus minimizing the likelihood of bugs or visual artifacts. Consequently, the DLSS 4 driver-level override should yield results comparable to a fully integrated DLSS 4 experience within a game.
When questioned about the potential for higher frame-generation models beyond the current 4x capability and the MFG support on older GPUs such as the RTX 40 series, NVIDIA clarified that they currently have no plans to pursue this. Their focus remains on expanding the roster of games that can support the existing 3x and 4x modes.
NVIDIA also addressed some technical concerns related to black screen issues and other problems encountered by RTX 50 GPU users:
Of course we take any report of user bugs very seriously and jump right on it. Current drivers have addressed a number of user bugs and will continue to do so.
Justin Walker – Senior Director of Product Management at GeForce
Finally, NVIDIA confirmed that work on Smooth Motion technology is ongoing, but they have not yet specified a release timeline.
Neural Shading: Upcoming Support for DirectX API
At CES 2025, NVIDIA introduced innovative Neural Shading technologies, including RTX Neural Materials, which significantly enhance texture, material, and radiance caching applications. By incorporating compact neural networks into programmable shaders, these advancements aim to optimize performance or lower resource requirements such as memory. The Neural Shader and Neural Compression SDK are now part of the NVIDIA RTX toolkit, with support for DirectX API anticipated to arrive next month.

Neural Rendering plays a pivotal role in the capabilities of the RTX 50 series graphics cards. In the coming months, it will be compelling to observe how NVIDIA collaborates with developers to enhance the gaming experience in forthcoming titles.
