In a significant move for the tech industry, NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang met with former President Donald Trump earlier today. This meeting comes on the heels of a contentious blog post released by NVIDIA, addressing concerns surrounding kill switches embedded in their GPUs. NVIDIA stands tall as the most valuable tech company globally, largely due to the soaring demand for its AI graphics processing units (GPUs) and the ongoing scrutiny regarding their export regulations.
NVIDIA CEO Engages with Trump Amidst AMD Confirmation of China GPU License Status
As the Trump administration is processing AI GPU export licenses for China, NVIDIA’s path towards acquisition remains uncertain. Competing firm AMD has yet to receive the necessary licenses for its chips, which were previously restricted. AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, confirmed this in a recent interview, highlighting the potential delays that NVIDIA may also face regarding license approvals tied to critical features in their GPUs, such as backdoors.
Huang’s White House visit aligns with the anticipated announcement from Apple CEO Tim Cook regarding a substantial $600 billion investment in the United States, which includes an additional commitment of $100 billion. Following news of this development, Apple’s stock surged by 6%, signaling investor optimism amidst ongoing tensions surrounding production shifts from China to India in light of increased US sanctions on Russian oil.
The nature of Huang’s discussion with Trump remains speculative; however, with current tensions over NVIDIA’s GPUs for the Chinese market, it’s likely that the subject of license approvals and embedded security features were key agenda items during their conversation.
Notably, NVIDIA has previously announced a massive $500 billion investment in AI data center infrastructure within the US. This significant commitment raises doubts about the feasibility of announcing additional investments during Huang’s visit.
