NVIDIA CEO Discusses Gaming in Isolation and “Not AI,” Claims Nintendo Switch 2 Chip is Most Advanced

In an unexpected appearance, NVIDIA’s CEO, Jensen Huang, recently lauded the company’s collaboration with Nintendo on the upcoming Switch 2, heralding the new Tegra chip as a “technological marvel.”

NVIDIA’s CEO Highlights Switch 2 Chip as a Game-Changer in Mobile Gaming

The focus of NVIDIA has noticeably shifted from its original goal of exclusively catering to gamers, as the company has achieved substantial success in the realm of artificial intelligence. During a surprise guest spot on the Creator’s Voice segment, Jensen shared insights about the Switch 2, emphasizing that the console reflects the legacy of Nintendo’s influential figure, Satoru Iwata. This event marked one of the earliest instances where NVIDIA publicly expressed admiration for the Switch 2, claiming that the chip embedded within is unlike any seen before and offers performance levels that far exceed other mobile chips on the market.

The chip inside Nintendo Switch 2 is unlike anything we’ve built before. It brings together three breakthroughs. The most advanced graphics ever in a mobile device. Full hardware ray tracing, high dynamic range for brighter highlights and deeper shadows.

And an architecture that supports backward compatibility, dedicated AI processors to sharpen, animate, and enhance gameplay in real time; and it’s ultra-low power.

While precise specifications for the Nintendo Switch 2 chip remain largely undisclosed, current information suggests that the Tegra chip will employ an Ampere architecture, boasting 1536 CUDA cores. In handheld mode, it is expected to operate at 561 MHz, with an increased frequency of 1007 MHz when docked. The chip’s CPU is likely to feature an ARM Cortex A7BC with an octa-core setup, potentially reaching speeds of up to 1.7 GHz. Although Jensen has proclaimed this mobile chip as the fastest, it may not hold up against certain AMD offerings within the handheld category. Nevertheless, it’s important to note that the Switch 2 is not primarily marketed as a handheld device.

One notable feature of the Switch 2 is its integration of NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology. This innovation could significantly enhance performance in demanding gaming scenarios, ensuring a superior experience for players. Overall, it was refreshing to hear Jensen discuss gaming authentically after a period dominated by AI-centric commentary. For the gaming community, this shift back to gaming-centric discussions is both welcome and necessary.
