NVIDIA has officially announced a groundbreaking partnership with Anthropic, a prominent player in the realm of ‘closed-source’ AI technologies. This collaboration signals a significant advancement for both companies and contributes to NVIDIA’s ongoing influence in the AI sector.
NVIDIA’s Strategic Commitment of One Gigawatt to Anthropic through Blackwell & Rubin Systems
Historically, NVIDIA has secured partnerships with numerous AI leaders, including major cloud service providers and innovative platforms like OpenAI and Amazon’s AWS. However, one notable absence from this list was Anthropic, especially given the previous tensions between the two entities. Fortunately, recent developments have reconciled their relationship. In a recent blog post from NVIDIA, it was revealed that they are forming a partnership aimed at enhancing AI capabilities, which includes a significant commitment from Anthropic of 1 gigawatt of computing power centered around the Blackwell and Vera Rubin systems. In return, NVIDIA is poised to invest a substantial $10 billion into Anthropic.
“Anthropic’s compute commitment will initially be up to 1 gigawatt of compute capacity with NVIDIA Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin systems. As part of the partnership, NVIDIA and Microsoft are committing to invest up to $10 billion and up to $5 billion respectively in Anthropic.” – NVIDIA
This partnership could be interpreted as a standard industry response to the growing computing demands of AI firms seeking to push the boundaries of technology. However, the relationship between NVIDIA and Anthropic carries additional layers of complexity. Recently, Anthropic became one of the first adopters of Google’s seventh-generation ‘Ironwood’ TPUs, marking a pivotal shift as it represented among the largest custom silicon agreements outside of NVIDIA. This development underscore the competitive landscape, where the Google-Anthropic alliance was perceived as a direct challenge to NVIDIA’s market dominance.

Adding to the intrigue, both Jensen Huang, NVIDIA’s CEO, and Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, have previously voiced their criticisms regarding each other’s operational strategies. Huang has pointed to concerns regarding Anthropic’s ‘closed-source’ methodology, while Amodei has criticized NVIDIA’s decisions related to distributing AI chips to the Chinese market. Despite their historical rivalry and differing viewpoints, the new partnership — with Microsoft acting as a crucial mediator — highlights an urgent collective recognition in the AI field for substantial investment and collaboration, even in the face of past disagreements.
