
NVIDIA’s advanced AI chips are set to embark on their first expedition beyond Earth, with the innovative AI startup Starcloud planning to position data centers in orbit. This groundbreaking initiative promises substantial benefits for computing power and efficiency.
Transformative Computing Power: NVIDIA’s H100 Chip
As the demand for data center expansion on Earth surges, particularly through major technology companies establishing multi-gigawatt AI facilities globally, there are notable challenges. While this expansion provides immense computational capabilities, it raises significant concerns such as increased electricity consumption and extensive land use, raising questions about sustainability. Starcloud’s innovative approach aims to address these issues by constructing data centers in space, and NVIDIA appears to be actively supporting this vision.

NVIDIA has highlighted Starcloud’s endeavors in a dedicated blog post, applauding the upcoming launch of the Starcloud-1 satellite, which is equipped with H100 AI GPUs. This satellite, weighing in at 60 kilograms, is estimated to deliver computational capabilities that are “100 times greater”than any existing space-based system. Notably, NVIDIA claims that by deploying these data centers in orbit, they can harness “infinite solar power”, negating the need for external battery systems. Furthermore, the cooling challenges typically faced by Earth-bound data centers are effectively managed through the inherent vacuum of space.
Emitting waste heat from infrared radiation into space can conserve significant water resources on Earth, since water isn’t needed for cooling. Constant exposure to the sun in orbit also means nearly infinite solar power — aka no need for the data centers to rely on batteries or backup power.

Starcloud’s inclusion in NVIDIA’s Inception program has facilitated vital connections between the startup and NVIDIA experts. CEO Philip Johnston envisions a future where the majority of data centers are established in outer space within the next decade, signaling a burgeoning interest in this innovative segment. The limitations of constructing large AI facilities on land make Starcloud’s pioneering efforts a remarkable example of “thinking outside the box”.As this concept of space-based data centers gains traction, it is likely to attract attention from key figures in the tech industry, including Elon Musk.
