The landscape for NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5080 has taken a troubling turn with the confirmation of a “missing ROP”issue, impacting every GPU in the RTX 50 series lineup.
Overview of NVIDIA’s “Missing ROPs”Dilemma: The Case of GeForce RTX 5080 and Other Affected GPUs
NVIDIA’s latest RTX 50 series launch has not been met with the enthusiasm the company hoped for, marked instead by significant supply shortages and now, performance concerns stemming from a defect in their Blackwell silicon. Initially thought to affect only specific models, this “missing ROPs”problem has now been acknowledged across the entire series. NVIDIA has officially remarked on the issue, confirming that it also pertains to the GeForce RTX 5080.
Upon further investigation, we’ve identified that an early production build of GeForce RTX 5080 GPUs were also affected by the same issue. Affected consumers can contact the board manufacturer for a replacement.

This confirmation means that several models, including the GeForce RTX 5090, RTX 5090D, and RTX 5070 Ti, are now also considered affected. The underlying cause appears to be tied to the overall performance and integrity of NVIDIA’s Blackwell silicon. At present, the performance degradation remains relatively minor, often manifesting as a single-digit drop. Consequently, the average consumer may not notice the issue unless they conduct a detailed analysis with tools such as GPU-Z.

Concerns regarding potential silicon degradation of the RTX Blackwell series suggest that this issue may not be isolated. As time progresses, we could witness more variants afflicted with either missing ROPs or possibly more severe problems. However, NVIDIA has assured users that their forthcoming “mid-range”GeForce RTX 5070 is not expected to carry this defect, implying that the company may have addressed the underlying silicon issues.
In response to The Verge’s questions, Berraondo adds that “no other Nvidia GPUs have been affected” — we specifically asked about the upcoming RTX 5070, and he says it’s not affected either.

For current owners experiencing the missing ROP issue, NVIDIA has begun addressing Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) requests. Nevertheless, users should be prepared for potential delays in replacements due to ongoing supply chain challenges, which will depend on NVIDIA’s prioritization of these requests.
