Nvidia’s RTX 5000 Series: A Troubling Launch
The launch of Nvidia’s RTX 5000 series, featuring the RTX 5090 and 5080, has been far from successful. During their CES 2025 presentation, Nvidia made bold claims, suggesting that the $549 RTX 5070 would perform on par with the previous flagship, the RTX 4090. However, reality has painted a different picture, with even the RTX 5080 failing to outclass its predecessor, the RTX 4090, and only marginally surpassing the 4080 SUPER in performance.
Severe Stock Shortages
Adding to the frustration, the availability of these new GPUs has been significantly limited. Retailer Overclockers UK confirmed the situation on their official X account, noting that customers can expect long wait times for restocks—up to 16 weeks for the RTX 5090 and six weeks for the 5080. They provided an update that encapsulated the dire circumstances:
RTX 50 Series Stock Update – 31/01/2025
Stock Information
- RTX 5090: Sold out, pre-orders ceased
- RTX 5080: Sold out, pre-orders ceased
Due to exceptionally high demand, initial stock sold out shortly after launch, with pre-orders limited in quantity. Here are the estimated restock times:
- RTX 5090 ETA: 3-16 Weeks
- RTX 5080 ETA: 2-6 Weeks
If you haven’t received a dispatch confirmation, your order is currently in the pre-order queue. We are working diligently to fulfill orders within the above ETAs, or even sooner if we can. User Complaints and Technical Issues
For those fortunate enough to obtain the RTX cards, challenges do not end there. Numerous reports have emerged regarding various issues, including Windows failing to detect the GPU, instances of cards becoming bricked, and problems with PCIe 5.0 compatibility.
Overclocking expert and YouTuber der8auer EN addressed the PCIe 5.0 complications in his launch review. He noted that the RTX 5090 struggles to operate effectively on Windows with PCIe Gen 5, even when equipped with the correct drivers. Users have found that switching to PCIe 4.0 in the BIOS resolves numerous issues, such as system freezes, black screens, and other visual glitches.
Moreover, there are reports of Windows not recognizing the RTX 5090 at all, a bug that persists regardless of changing the PCIe version.
In a further complication, the RTX 5090D—an exclusive model available in China—has faced significant user discontent due to instances of cards bricking when Windows and BIOS fail to recognize them.
Nvidia’s Response and Future Outlook
Nvidia has reassured its users that they did not anticipate issues such as power connectors melting, and, so far, this claim remains valid. The hope is that the launch of the GeForce RTX 50 series will not see further exacerbations of these challenges.
