“Novak Djokovic is not playing; Jannik Sinner’s taken it to a new level” – Martina Navratilova on whether Italian is the best player after Miami win
Following his victory at the 2024 Miami Open, Martina Navratilova expressed her opinion on whether Jannik Sinner is currently the top player in the world.
At the Miami 1000 tournament, Sinner secured a 6-3, 6-1 win against Grigor Dimitrov in a speedy one hour and 14 minutes. This victory not only marked the Italian’s first championship in Miami but also his third of the season, following his previous triumphs at the Australian Open and ABN AMRO Open. It was also his second ATP Masters 1000 title overall, after his previous win at the 2023 Canadian Open.
Sinner’s victory has positioned him to reach a career-high World No. 2 ranking, making him the first Italian player to attain such a milestone. In addition, he has now claimed multiple Masters 1000 titles, solidifying his record for the most tour-level trophies won by an Italian in the Open Era with a total of 13 titles.
After Jannik Sinner’s victory at the Miami Open, Martina Navratilova, an 18-time Grand Slam singles champion, was asked on Tennis Channel if she believes Sinner is the top player in the world at the moment.
In agreement, she noted that Sinner has demonstrated impressive consistency and skill on the ATP Tour, especially with the absence of Novak Djokovic in the tournament, giving him a notable advantage over his rivals.
“Well, Novak Djokovic is not playing unfortunately for us. Yes, he’s [Sinner] been the most consistent and his average today is better than everybody else’s average at the moment. He’s taken it to a whole new level,”Navratilova said (at 0:03).
The ex-World No. 1 also mentioned that Jannik Sinner currently possesses a great deal of “peace of mind”and “confidence”on the court, thanks to the successful phase in his career.
“So it gives him a lot of peace of mind because he knows he doesn’t have to play out of his socks. He does not have to redline anything to win matches, the other guys are the ones that have to redline. So that gives you a lot of confidence,” she added.
