“Novak Djokovic at 36 is still looking for improvement in his game” – Jannik Sinner’s coach says top competitors push Miami Open champ to get better

Despite his loss at Indian Wells, Jannik Sinner has bounced back and is now winning titles at the Miami Open, although he may not have been able to replicate Novak Djokovic’s impressive 41-0 start to the season.

On Sunday, March 31, the Italian emerged victorious in the summit clash, defeating Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1 and claiming his third trophy of the season from four tournaments.

After the match, Sinner’s coach Darren Cahill expressed his excitement over the achievement and shared some positive words with the media. While recognizing the great tennis displayed by his ward, the Australian emphasized the importance of continuous improvement.

Cahill noted that even at the age of 36, 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic serves as an example by constantly making adjustments to his game.

Despite the fact that Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz, top competitors for Sinner, also continue to challenge him, he added that they are no different. He pointed out that they consistently motivate the newly crowned Miami Open champion to improve his game.

“It’s the great thing about Novak Djokovic as well,”Darren Cahill said. “Novak Djokovic at 36 years of age is still looking for improvement in his game, and we know that he’s going to make adjustments.”

“We know that Daniil Medvedev will make adjustments. We know that changes will be made. Carlos Alcaraz continues to look for improvements in his serve. It’s just normal,”he added.

Now, both Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic will be focused on securing a smooth transition onto the European clay swing as it starts this month.

Sinner will begin the new leg of the season with a strong sense of self-assurance, having emerged victorious in three out of the four tournaments he has competed in. His sole defeat in the 2024 season occurred in the semifinals of Indian Wells, where he engaged in a three-set match against Carlos Alcaraz.

Despite his Sunshine Double, Djokovic will undoubtedly be disappointed with his performance. Following a surprising third-round loss at Indian Wells to Italian up-and-comer Luca Nardi, the Serb made the tough decision to withdraw from the Miami Open.

It is worth mentioning that Djokovic has not yet won any tournaments in the 2024 season. His most recent defeat came in the semifinals of the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season, where he was the reigning champion, at the hands of Jannik Sinner.
