Markus “Notch”Persson Considers Creating a Minecraft Successor

More than a decade after offloading Minecraft to Microsoft for an impressive $2.5 billion, the game’s creator, Markus “Notch”Persson, appears eager to embark on a new project that will serve as a successor to his iconic sandbox game. Intriguingly, Notch seems open to collaborating with Microsoft on this forthcoming venture, although formal development has yet to commence.

Engaging the Community: A Poll on Game Concepts

This renewed interest began with a recent poll conducted by Notch on January 1, 2024, through social media. In this poll, he sought to gauge community interest in two potential gaming projects. One concept was described as a “traditional roguelike”combined with a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler, inspired by classics like ADOM and Nethack. The second option presented was a “spiritual successor”to Minecraft itself.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive, as his post on X has garnered over 1.2 million views and received more than 260,000 votes, with almost 80% favoring the Minecraft-inspired project.

Plans for a Minecraft 2: Balancing Innovation and Respecting IP

In light of the poll results, Notch has expressed his intentions to pursue the community’s preferred choice. He emphasized the challenges of creating a direct sequel, highlighting that such an endeavor would be “super illegal”due to Microsoft’s ownership of the intellectual property. Notch did, however, articulate a willingness to team up with Microsoft, saying:

“If Microsoft, for some reason, would want me to do it, and we, somehow, agreed on the terms, I’d absolutely be willing do to that. I’d even give them a much bigger share than I’d feel obliged to just to make it clear I’m not doing it with ill intent. But I’ll be a bitch to work with.”

In subsequent communications, Notch reiterated his commitment to pursuing this endeavor. He quipped that he has “basically announced Minecraft 2,”and voiced concerns about the pitfalls of creating a spiritual sequel, where companies often fall short of expectations. “Spiritual successors are usually kind of… you know… washed up. Tragic,”he noted, aiming to create a project that meets genuine audience desires rather than merely capitalizing on nostalgia.

Commitment to Ethical Development

Notch is adamant about ensuring that his new project will not encroach on the existing work of Mojang and Microsoft’s development endeavors with Minecraft. He stated, “I intend to do this in a way that in no way tries to sneakily infringe on the incredible work the Mojang team is doing and that Microsoft is successfully doing the Microsoft shittification about.”He acknowledges and respects the direction that Microsoft has chosen for the franchise, noting that they have allowed Mojang creative freedom.

The Future of Notch’s Project: What Lies Ahead?

The future of Notch’s Minecraft spiritual successor remains uncertain. Will it materialize, and if it does, can it capture the essence of Minecraft’s open-world design and widespread appeal? As the community awaits further developments, the prospect of a new creation from the original mind behind Minecraft has the potential to reignite interest and bring fresh ideas to the gaming landscape.
