“No Survival Instincts” — Love is Blind Critics Call Out Monica for Choosing Stephen Despite His Cheating History

Netflix’s popular dating show Love is Blind debuted with Episodes 1-6 of Season 7 on Wednesday, October 2, 2024. Singles from diverse backgrounds joined this innovative experiment to discover their life partners, encouraged to express their vulnerabilities and inhibitions to build genuine connections.

The experiment posed the ultimate question: is love truly blind? In Season 7 Episode 2, Monica identified her ideal partner in Stephen. They established a robust relationship, committed to each other. During one of their dates, Stephen revealed his past infidelity, admitting he cheated on his previous partner. He expressed his remorse over his actions and mentioned he was seeking therapy to address his behavior.

Monica valued his transparency and was prepared to overlook his past. On another date, during a discussion about their diverse backgrounds and political beliefs, Stephen referred to Monica as a “mutt.”Instead of being offended, Monica embraced the term and looked forward to continuing their dates.

Fans of Love is Blind were taken aback by their exchanges, flocking to X to voice their criticisms of Monica for accepting Stephen despite knowing about his cheating history.

“No. Monica has absolutely no survival instincts because the minute I heard ‘I’m a cheater’ and ‘my most recent relationship’ I would have been OUT OF THEREEE! Omg,”a fan commented.

“Monica you weak a** bird, how are you the one saying sorry when the man admitted to being a cheater…,”another fan remarked.

“Stephen is a walking red flag. Monica, start running,”a user tweeted.

Many fans criticized Monica for showing sympathy towards Stephen after learning of his infidelity.

“Ayo, Monica said it’s not so black and white when this man said HE’S A CHEATER. And that he cheated because HE DIDN’T THINK HE WAS GOOD ENOUGH for his MOST RECENT relationship. Girl, this is not in his past. He’s just now in therapy. She’s a dunce,”a user responded.

“You could hand Monica a piece of paper stating that Stephen is a red flag and she still wouldn’t catch it. You gave him sympathy for cheating???”one commenter stated.

“Did Monica just say ‘I’m sorry’ to Stephen who was the one that cheated on his ex!?!”another fan noted.

“Monica telling a man who said he ‘technically holds the title of a cheater’ that he’s being too hard on himself is quite insane to me… stand up please,”another user tweeted.

Other fans were astonished that Monica remained unfazed by Stephen’s “mutt”comment.

“Stephen really called Monica a mutt on national tv and she laughed it off. What in the tarnation is going on,”a netizen remarked.

“Now why did Monica laugh & agree when Stephen called her a mutt,”another person questioned.

Monica from Love is Blind believes Stephen is being “too hard”on himself

While introducing herself on camera, Monica shared that she joined Love is Blind because she typically judged men based on their looks. She admitted that “arms”made her feel “hot and bothered,”acknowledging her desire to break this pattern of focusing on the superficial.

Her initial interaction in Episode 2 was with Stephen. Immediately, she inquired about his last relationship and its challenges. Stephen recounted that it was two and a half years ago and was one of the healthiest, most communicative relationships he had experienced. He emphasized his commitment to communication and transparency with partners.

Monica expressed her desire for a relationship or marriage that doesn’t demand unrealistic perfection. This openness encouraged Stephen to reveal a personal secret he wasn’t proud of.

“I technically hold the title of being a cheater. I’ve been cheated on multiple times as well. I believed this person that I was dating at the time, I believed I didn’t deserve her,”Stephen confessed.

He described his experience with cheating, confessing to emotional infidelity by sliding into another girl’s DMs and flirting intentionally. Despite knowing he would face repercussions, he pursued the affair and later reflected on his disappointment in his actions. After hearing Stephen’s story, Monica responded, “I’m so sorry.”

Stephen also mentioned he was working with a therapist to improve himself. Monica appreciated his candor and remarked:

“We’re all human. I’m 36 years old, like, it’s not so black and white.”

Although she had “gross”experiences with partners in the past, Monica was prepared to seek a “path to forgiveness.”She stated:

“I can tell, even the way you described how upset you were with yourself, I really appreciate it, and I think you were, like, too hard on yourself.”

Later in the episode, the couple delved into their complex ancestries. While Monica noted her Honduran and African-American heritage, Stephen remarked, “Okay, so you really are a mutt, girl,”to which Monica humorously replied, “I’m a f**king mutt.”

Ultimately, this Love is Blind couple got engaged in Episode 4 of Season 7.

Love is Blind is available to stream now on Netflix.
