Overview of No Straight Roads 2: A Promising Sequel
In 2020, Malaysian game development studio Metronomik released No Straight Roads, an innovative action-adventure game that combined a vibrant visual style with a strong musical foundation. This title also featured memorable boss battles that overshadowed its overall simplicity. Following the success of its Encore Edition, which included additional content, the team quickly pivoted to developing No Straight Roads 2, aiming to enhance every aspect of its predecessor, from gameplay mechanics to musical experiences.
Insights from Gamescom: A Conversation with Metronomik
Last month at Gamescom, I had the privilege of meeting Wan Hazmer, co-founder and Game Director, alongside Rie Matsuura, the Business Development Manager at Metronomik. Much like our discussion at E3 2019 regarding the original game, Wan was brimming with enthusiasm about the sequel. Indeed, No Straight Roads 2 appears to be a significant leap forward, addressing the limitations that occasionally detracted from the previous installment.
Expanding Horizons: New Characters and Gameplay Dynamics
In this sequel, Bunk Bed Junction is stepping beyond the confines of Vinyl City. Significantly, they are expanding their band to include a new keyboardist, Casey, alongside the already popular guitarist Mayday and drummer Zuke. For the first time, players can expect a more cohesive band dynamic, with all characters engaging in battles together even when not under direct player control. This includes combat scenarios with mobs, bolstered by an enhanced AI system made possible through increased studio resources and support from publisher Shueisha Games.
Visual and Gameplay Enhancements

Additionally, the scope of stages within the game is set to expand significantly, allowing for a more varied exploration experience, mitigating the linearity that affected the original title. This increase in scale aims to enrich player engagement and offer a more dynamic gameplay experience.
Musical Evolution: Jazz Meets Action
One of the standout features of No Straight Roads 2 is its exploration of jazz rhythms, in addition to electronic dance music (EDM).This new direction is expected to introduce a complexity that goes beyond what players experienced in the first game. During my brief demo of the sequel, it became clear that boss fights would continue to be the pinnacle of gameplay. Enhanced complexity is evident; the demo showcased how the music’s intensity would foreshadow boss attacks, integrating rhythm-based mechanics with traditional gameplay.
Influence and Innovation in Gameplay Mechanics
With the action-rhythm genre evolving, particularly after the success of Hi-Fi Rush, there has been speculation regarding how No Straight Roads 2 might adapt some concepts. However, Metronomik remains focused on maintaining its unique identity. While they acknowledge influence, they are integrating music in a way that is less restrictive. Unlike Hi-Fi Rush, where players face penalties for deviating from the beat, No Straight Roads 2 encourages rhythm-based actions without tedious restrictions, allowing for a broader range of musical styles to be incorporated seamlessly.
The Future Awaits: Anticipating No Straight Roads 2
The myriad improvements set to debut in No Straight Roads 2, including new multiplayer features, suggest a more engaging gameplay experience compared to its predecessor. The glimpses I have seen ignite excitement about how Metronomik plans to elevate their boss encounters and introduce new characters, which promise to enrich the already thrilling gameplay. However, fans will need to remain patient, as the game is projected for release in 2026, initially slated for PC and additional console announcements to follow.
