“No One Wants to Tank”: Marvel Rivals Fans Urge NetEase to Focus on Tank Characters as Vanguard Mains Are Scarce

Players of Marvel Rivals are increasingly expressing frustration with the current matchmaking dynamics, particularly the reluctance to select the Vanguard role. This trend mirrors challenges seen in other popular multiplayer games, such as Overwatch, where the majority of players gravitate towards Damage and Support roles to maximize their effectiveness in combat while avoiding the dangers of frontline engagement. The lack of players willing to take up the Vanguard role is a significant contributor to repeated losses, as teams often struggle to establish an aggressive presence.

A recent discussion on Reddit began with user Fi3nd7, who questioned the outdated design philosophies still influencing the game. They argued, “

It makes no sense why we keep shoehorning these archaic design paradigms that so clearly should be aged out and replaced with something more innovative and interesting.

Why Are Players Avoiding Tank Roles in Marvel Rivals?

Limited Choices and Reluctance to Tank

Despite having notable Vanguards like Magneto, Thor, Peni Parker, Hulk, and Groot to choose from in Marvel Rivals, many fans believe additional options are needed. The appeal for some players to engage with the Vanguard role exists, as evidenced by user NoPattern2009, who stated, “Vanguard is dope. Peni is dope. Magnus is dope.”Contrarily, other players, such as Prizmatik7, argue that the skill gap associated with tanking discourages participation.

“People don’t want to play tank because the general perception of what a ‘tank’ should be doesn’t hold up that well in team shooter game design. It’s about ‘creating/holding space and applying pressure’ (a very broad and difficult-to-understand concept without being dedicated to the role of a team shooter tank).”- Prizmatik7

Our Perspective: The Challenges of Tanking

The Importance of Team Coordination in Tanking

Tanking presents unique challenges, particularly in terms of reliance on team support. As an individual who frequently switches roles, I agree with the desire for a wider selection of Vanguard heroes. Although there are future expansions planned for Marvel Rivals, including new characters, specifics about their abilities have yet to be disclosed. The effectiveness of a tank role heavily depends on sustaining heals and team cooperation; without this, a Vanguard can quickly succumb to opposing Damage classes.

Currently, I haven’t encountered significant difficulties with players opting for tank roles, as characters like Thor and Dr. Strange are popular choices among players. However, I anticipate that as competition intensifies at higher ranks, the challenge of filling the Vanguard position may become more pronounced. The upcoming addition of characters such as The Thing might improve the gameplay experience for those who find themselves struggling to play as a tank.
