Pocketpair Responds to Nintendo’s Lawsuit with Significant Changes to Palworld

In a recent announcement, Pocketpair outlined a series of modifications to their game Palworld, prompted by the ongoing legal issues with Nintendo. The lawsuit, filed in 2024, alleges that Palworld infringes on several Nintendo patents, particularly due to its similarities with the Pokémon franchise.

Modifications to Game Mechanics

The first significant change already implemented focuses on the “Pal Spheres, ” which serve a function similar to Pokémon’s iconic Poké Balls. Traditionally, players would throw these spheres to summon their Pals. Following the lawsuit, Pocketpair adjusted this mechanic; now, when a player uses a Pal Sphere, the designated Pal materializes instantaneously beside the player instead of using a traditional throwing animation.

Upcoming Adjustments in Version 0.5.5

Looking ahead, an important update is scheduled for version 0.5.5, which will alter how players navigate the game world. In this upcoming patch, the ability to ride Pals for transport will be removed. Players will instead utilize a new item called the Glider. The Glider will allow characters to soar through the skies, replacing the previous riding mechanic. This change maintains the presence of specific Pals, such as Celaray and Galeclaw, which will still offer buffs enhancing flight speed.

Character Design Similarities Remain Unaddressed

While Pocketpair has proactively made these gameplay adjustments, it is noteworthy that the changes primarily focus on mechanics rather than addressing similarities in character designs. Players may recognize the striking resemblance between various Pals and iconic Pokémon. Notable comparisons include:

  • Lamball and Wooloo
  • Bad and Zorua
  • Anubis and Lucario
  • Chillet, which evokes Goodra
  • Crimson resembling Eevee
  • Bristla’s similarity to Bellossom
  • Bushi and Hisuian Decidueye
  • Foxcicle, reminiscent of Ninetales
  • Katress, bearing a Mismagius look
  • Depresso, closely resembling Espurr

These design parallelisms may still pose challenges for Pocketpair as they continue to navigate their legal obligations and the impact on their creativity within the game.
