Nintendo Switch Surges Past 150 Million Sales Milestone
Nintendo has announced a significant achievement for its versatile hybrid console, the Nintendo Switch, which has now exceeded 150 million units sold. As of December 31, 2024, the total sales reached an impressive 150.86 million units, alongside remarkable software sales totaling 1.359 billion units.
Recent Sales Highlights
During the last quarter, the Nintendo Switch experienced a hardware sales boost, with 4.82 million units sold alongside 53.7 million software units. Popular titles contributing to these numbers included:
- The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom – 3.91 million units
- Super Mario Party Jamboree – 6.17 million units
However, Nintendo acknowledged that these figures fell short of expectations, prompting a revision of its full fiscal year forecast.
Future Plans Amid Sales Adjustments
Despite the downturn in sales, Nintendo remains optimistic about the Nintendo Switch’s continued popularity. The company stated:
“Although Nintendo Switch hardware and software sales through the third quarter were below expectations, Nintendo Switch continues to be enjoyed by many people. Going forward, we will continue to release new offerings so even more consumers keep playing Nintendo Switch.”
Nintendo has already rolled out Donkey Kong Country Returns HD this January and is set to release Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition in March. Additionally, various third-party publishers are planning to launch a diverse range of titles, enhancing the platform’s appeal.
Revised Financial Outlook
In light of the recent sales trends, Nintendo revised its financial forecast initially published on November 5, 2024. This update takes into account the sales data from the nine months ended December 31, 2024, and reassesses expected sales for the remainder of the fiscal year and the exchange rate fluctuations.
Looking Ahead: The Arrival of Switch 2
With an imminent unveiling of the anticipated Switch 2 via a dedicated Direct presentation scheduled for April 2, there is an expectation that sales for the current model may continue to decline. Nevertheless, reaching the 150 million milestone is monumental, as the Switch is now just 4 million units shy of Nintendo’s all-time best-selling console, the DS. It’s important to note that the all-time best-seller, Sony’s PlayStation 2, remains out of reach with over 160 million units sold.
