Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Surge Past 10 Million Units, Surpassing Original Switch Performance

Nintendo’s Impressive Quarterly Results Highlight Success of Switch 2

This morning, Nintendo announced its quarterly and half-year results for the fiscal year 2025, spanning from April to September. The standout news from this report is that the Nintendo Switch 2 has already surpassed sales figures of its predecessor, the original Nintendo Switch.

Sales Surge for Nintendo Switch 2

As of September 30, the Switch 2 has achieved remarkable sales of 10.36 million units within just a few months of its launch. To put this in perspective, the original Switch took approximately ten months to reach similar sales figures, demonstrating a phenomenal market reception for the new device.

Software Sales That Impress

In addition to hardware performance, the Nintendo Switch 2’s software sales have also been impressive, totaling 20.62 million units. This averages out to nearly two games purchased per console sold, highlighting the strong demand for titles on the new platform.

Key Titles Drive Sales

Among the Switch 2’s library, Mario Kart World has dominated as a flagship launch title, selling 9.57 million copies. Meanwhile, Donkey Kong Bananza has also performed well, with sales reaching 3.49 million units during the same period.

Revised Sales Projections

Given the strong sales momentum, Nintendo has significantly updated its sales forecast. Initially expecting to sell 15 million units by the end of the fiscal year in March 2026, the company now anticipates reaching 19 million units in the first year alone. This prediction is especially noteworthy considering the ongoing challenges posed by US tariffs, which previously led industry analysts, such as DFC Intelligence, to downgrade their projections.

Legacy of the Original Switch

During the same reporting period, the original Nintendo Switch sold 1.89 million units and achieved a staggering 61.56 million software units sold. Nintendo has slightly adjusted the full-year forecast for the original model from 4.5 million units to 4 million, while software sales projections have increased from 105 million to an impressive 125 million copies.

Overall Impact on Nintendo’s Legacy

To date, the original Nintendo Switch has sold 154 million units since its launch in March 2017. Although it seems unlikely to surpass the 160.6 million units sold by Sony’s PlayStation 2—the best-selling console of all time—this doesn’t dampen Nintendo’s achievements. The company continues to focus on innovation and customer satisfaction, reinforcing its position in the competitive gaming market.
