Nintendo Switch 2: RAM, Storage, and NVIDIA DLSS Boost Its Performance Over PlayStation 4, Says CD Projekt Red VP of Technology

Exploring the Capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2

While the Nintendo Switch 2 may exhibit specifications similar to the PlayStation 4, it boasts features that elevate its performance beyond what players have experienced on older systems. Recent discussions about the upcoming Switch 2 version of Cyberpunk 2077 have shed light on how these advancements come into play.

Development Insights from CD Projekt Red

In an interview with IGN, Charles Tremblay, Vice President of Technology at CD Projekt Red, detailed the journey of bringing Cyberpunk 2077 to the new console. The development process, which commenced in the summer of 2023, was fraught with challenges, particularly due to the hardware differences between the Switch 2 and the x86 architecture originally designed for the game. To navigate these hurdles, NVIDIA Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) played a pivotal role, enhancing the game’s performance on the Switch 2 by leveraging its technological advantages.

Key Features Enhancing Performance

The Nintendo Switch 2 integrates several enhancements that contribute to its superior functionality. Tremblay identified the absence of mechanical drives—common in previous-generation consoles—as a significant advantage of the Switch 2. This transition facilitates faster loading times and smoother gameplay experiences. Additionally, the console’s increased RAM not only optimizes performance for Cyberpunk 2077 but also accommodates the inclusion of the game’s Phantom Liberty expansion, enhancing the overall gaming experience.

Visual Comparisons and Frame Rate Targets

Although Cyberpunk 2077 for the Switch 2 may not rival the visual fidelity of its PC counterpart, CD Projekt Red is committed to ensuring an engaging experience tailored specifically for the new platform. Tremblay has indicated that while the game targets a steady 30 frames per second (FPS), it may also run at 40 FPS, which serves as a reasonable trade-off compared to the standard 60 FPS found in most contemporary console games.

Release Information

Players can look forward to immersing themselves in the world of Cyberpunk 2077 on the Nintendo Switch 2 later this week, with the official launch set for June 5th.
