The iPhone 16 Pro Max has emerged as a formidable gaming device, particularly with the equipped A18 Pro chip, designed to run AAA games with impressive framerates. A key question arises regarding its performance compared to Nintendo’s newest offering, the Switch 2, especially when running the popular game Fortnite.

In a recent analysis by YouTuber Dame Tech, insightful revelations were made about the performance of both devices while playing Fortnite at 60FPS. Starting with the iPhone 16 Pro Max, it consistently achieves a stable framerate of 60FPS, operating at maximum visual settings. However, it does this at a resolution of just 704p, regardless of whether the device is charging or not.

On the other hand, the Nintendo Switch 2 showcases a more robust performance when docked, rendering Fortnite at a resolution of 1, 224p, while it drops to 900p in handheld mode. However, Dame Tech noted that the Switch employs Dynamic Resolution techniques, which can reduce its effective resolution to 800p docked and an even lower 600p in handheld mode, particularly in areas where maintaining 60FPS becomes challenging. This adaptation results in a lower graphical fidelity compared to the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Moreover, there is a significant difference in power consumption between the two devices. When docked, the Nintendo Switch 2 can draw between 18W to 19W, and around 9W during handheld use. In stark contrast, the A18 Pro is notably more power efficient, operating within a range of 4W to 5W. This means that the Switch 2’s power draw exceeds that of the iPhone 16 Pro Max by more than 400%.

Considering these facets, it becomes evident that if the iPhone 16 Pro Max had an enhanced cooling system, the A18 Pro might be capable of operating at higher wattage levels, potentially enabling Fortnite to run at a crisper resolution. However, the substantial size difference between the devices allows the Switch 2 to manage a greater power draw and support a more effective heatsink.
