Nintendo’s Switch 2 Chip Production: Insights into Technology Choices
Nintendo has opted for the Samsung SEC8N process to manufacture its upcoming Nintendo Switch 2’s T239 chip, although the company explored multiple alternatives during its decision-making process.
Exploring Process Nodes: A Deliberate Approach
A recent report by the Korean news outlet Chosun, shared via the Gaming Leaks and Rumors subreddit, details that Nintendo initially evaluated both TSMC’s 7nm and 8nm processes alongside alternatives proposed by Samsung. Ultimately, the choice of Samsung was influenced by their rapid and reliable delivery capabilities as well as cost-effectiveness.
Choosing the Right Process Node
Although Nintendo weighed the pros and cons between Samsung’s 5nm and 8nm process nodes, the decision leaned towards the 8nm option. This decision was primarily due to the absence of the need for Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) exposure equipment, which offers not only manufacturing benefits but also a more favorable unit price and improved yield. Furthermore, while the Switch 2’s launch model will utilize the Samsung SEC8N node, there are discussions that future revisions of the system could leverage Samsung’s 5nm technology, as suggested by sources close to Samsung Electronics.
Leak Confirmation: Specifications and Performance
This week brought clarity regarding the official specifications for the Nintendo Switch 2, confirming many details consistent with earlier leaks. An exploration of the system’s software development kit (SDK) has unearthed additional critical information about the hardware capabilities, including available CPU cores, GPU performance, and RAM allocation for gaming. Notably, the inclusion of Game Chat appears to be resource-intensive enough that the SDK provides tools to test its functionality without requiring an active gameplay session.
Release Date and Future Prospects
The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to make its global debut on June 5th, with some regional exceptions. As the launch approaches, anticipation builds around the innovations this new console will bring to the gaming landscape.
